"Rich does quality work and is an honest, hard working man. He came out to replace two of my rotted posts that support the roof over my front porch along with damaged deck boards. Upon removal of the railing I discovered that an additional post needed to be replaced and Rich had no issue procuring the supplies and completing the job on time. I will be hiring Rich again for future projects."

"Found Sentri on Angi. Jeanette and Violet were very pleasant and efficient in getting a contractor to me in the time frame needed. The contractor was excellent and the roof looks great! I would definitely work with them again if I had additional projects."

"An excellent job all around installing a new kitchen countertop. Baha design layout for cutting the stone was exceptional. Measurement and installation were excellent (special thank you to Chris and Walter). Finally project manager Anissa was very effective and demonstrated a very high level of customer satisfaction orientation. Thank you everyone at Classic Granite and Marble!"

"We are very pleased with the service we received from Good Neighbor Fencing. Bob Stewart was great to work with. He helped us select and design a fence that would work well in the space we planned to enclose. He also took notice of our dogs and suggested smaller spacing between the rails on the fence to be sure our smaller dog did not get out of the backyard once we had it fenced in. In addition to being very pleased with working with Bob, we were extremely happy with the installation that Vernon and Joe did. They were careful to ensure that the fence was installed properly and even went so far as to hand-dig the post holes so that they did not do any damage to our irrigation system and underground electric fence. All that said, my husband and I would recommend Good Neighbor Fencing without reservation."

Woodworking questions, answered by experts

No, beams are the primary load-bearers for flooring or roofing systems, and they distribute the weight of the structure to your foundational supports, while joists bear far less weight and distribute their loads to the beams. Beams are usually thicker and longer, and they have support posts or foundation walls beneath them for support.

You don’t need a cutting board. In fact, cutting is the original purpose of butcher block countertops. That said, wood is porous and can harbor germs. You’ll need to clean your countertop thoroughly after use. Knives can also scratch the surface. This adds to the patina of the wood, but not everyone likes the look—in which case, you may want to use a cutting board.

Most landscape timbers are 8 feet long, but some are also available in 10-foot and 12-foot lengths. Choose the length that will allow you to install landscape timbers using the least amount of cutting to fit. Shorter timbers will allow you to more easily create angles and shorter plant bed sides.

Many contractors prefer checks because they’re easy to track and have no associated fees. However, many also accept credit cards (though they might add a fee to cover their processing costs).

There are two ways you can cut trim for doorways: with a miter saw or a table saw. Mitered joints need a 45-degree angle. If you’re unfamiliar with a miter saw, you might want to consider buying extra trim pieces or choosing butted joints instead. One wrong cut, and you’ll need to power up the saw again with a new piece.

Butted joints—also called shaker style—don’t need a 45-degree angle. Instead, your side pieces attach perpendicularly to the header trim and only require a straight cut.
