"Selma and Renata are a great team. I have been looking awhile for conscientious, reliable and thorough house cleaners. We have a big house, 3 pets and often have visitors. I am a perfectionist when it comes to keeping my house clean so I was happy to find Selma and Renata at A Cleaning Service! They clean and sanitize 5 bathrooms, vacuum the carpets and rugs, vacuum and mop the tile in the kitchen, breakfast room and laundry room and vacuum and mop the hard wood floors. They polish all the furniture, clean/dust all the blinds, window sills (for over 40 windows) and dust the lower walls and ceiling fans. They windex the glass top tables. They put new sheets on the bed and even fold the throw blankets and arrange the pillows prettily on the sofas. They dust the wall hangings. The kitchen is sparkling when they leave. If I ask for anything special, they always oblige. There's more but I think you get the idea!"

"Owner/operator John Rife is a top notch contractor who employs first rate employees to get the job done. In my basement, I had a concrete slab floor and two old, drafty windows that needed replacement. I wanted him to put down a nice Cali Bamboo floor and add new Anderson windows. When he came to give his initial estimate, we talked at length about what the job entailed. He answered my questions, however ridiculous, with a direct honesty that was refreshing. John gave me the price estimate that was fair: not as high as other contractors with whom I spoke but not as low as others either. What made him our pick was that I felt that based on our conversations, I could trust him to do the job on time and on budget. I am happy to say that not only was the job done on time, the price did not go up along the way. How often does that happen? In two days, John's employees, Chris and Edward, worked diligently to get the job done. They must have done more than a few jobs together because, except for the occasional work related banter, they hardly spoke. They would arrive at 8am and leave by 4pm and work for the entire time. If not for the intermittent sound of a power saw, I would scarcely have known they were down there at all. When on the second day their work was done, they packed up and left without me having thanked them for a job well done. If you are reading this Chris and Edward, you did great. Thanks! I will definitely be calling Rife Remodeling and Flooring for future remodeling projects. Thanks again, John."

"Treated myself to a Big Deal for $99 (6 hrs of cleaning, or 3hrs with 2 people). This is the 2nd time I’ve had someone clean my house, the previous time was also an Angie’s List Big Deal, about 2 years ago. I was so pleased with their services. Paula and her co-worker worked diligently and left my house sparkling. I have a split level home, about 1,500 square feet, occupied by 4 adults and a furry dog. When Paula arrived we discussed my priorities. They were the 3 bathrooms (one was especially in rough shape) and the kitchen. I told her anything else would be bonus as far as I was concerned. They did a great job with the bathrooms and the kitchen, and on top of that vacuumed the living/dining room, hallway & stairs, and mopped the tile floor in my family room. It was so wonderful to have this taken care of before the holiday season."

Ceramic Tile questions, answered by experts

Yes, it’s possible to cut tile without a wet saw; instead, you can use an angle grinder, a glass cutter, a snap cutter, tile nippers, or a rotary tool with a tile-cutting blade. A manual tile cutter or snap cutter works well for the larger tiles that wet saws are typically used for, while smaller projects might just require nippers or a glass cutting wheel. If you’re working with large quantities of tile, however, power tools are best.

You can lay tile directly on a plywood countertop, but if it’s a high-traffic surface in a kitchen, it’s better to add a moisture-resistant base. Plywood is susceptible to moisture, so if dampness seeps through from the surface around the sink or where you prep food, it can cause the plywood to warp, leading to grout damage, cracked tiles, or mold growth under the surface.

The reasons not to install flooring underneath a bathtub outweigh the benefits. A properly installed bathtub will keep water from reaching the unprotected subfloor underneath. Installing a tub on top of finished flooring can lead to damage and scratches to the new floor. Also, a small leak from a tub drain may be more difficult to notice if finished flooring impedes water drips.

Tile shouldn’t be set tight against the tub. Bathtubs can expand when filled, and they can shift slightly with the weight of occupants. For this reason, it’s important to leave a slight gap between the bathtub and the first row of tile. Aim for a narrow gap of approximately 1/16 of an inch, filled with caulk, to allow for this expansion and movement while still allowing for tile shower waterproofing.

Glass tiles are among the most difficult to install. This is because their transparency makes the adhesive visible, and any imperfections on the opposite side are also likely to be visible. Glass tiles also must be handled carefully during installation, as they are prone to scratching. For these reasons, glass tiles often require professional installation to get the most out of their beauty and unique look.
