"Tony showed up and, within two weeks, transformed our house. We had popcorn ceilings from the 70's and wallpapered walls in almost every room. The walls and ceilings are textured and ready to go. We couldn't be more pleased with Tony and his quality of work. Also, Tony went the extra mile; we had old stuff in the house that needed to be hauled away. Tony showed up with a 12-foot trailer and moved out our junk. I have recommended Tony to family and friends. If you are looking for quality work at a very reasonable price, call Tony. And don't hesitate to call him for handyman jobs. I am calling him back for light fixture hanging and to install our baseboards. He is now my go-to guy!!"

"Andrade Drywall was quick to respond to my request thru Home Advisor, quick to come to my home and give me an estimate, and quick to get started working. I was amazed at how hard they worked and how nice the finished product looked and at a very reasonable cost. Thanks Andrade Drywall."

"I called HomeAdvisors on a Saturday morning, after firing another contractor for putting me off....again! Cristobal, the owner of CL Drywall, called me within minutes. He wanted to come out that morning, which he did, to give me a bid. Hired him on the spot. A project that had stretched into a month was accomplished by Omar and Cristobol in 5 days (mud has to dry, ya know). OUTSTANDING work and best of all, Omar was there when he said he would be. Not too common in the construction workforce anymore."

"It was amazing! I was out of town for a week and I gave Wilmar a key to my condo. Everything went great and my cabinets are beautiful and durable. They masked everything and cleaned up so I had no worries. I was concerned about one drawer not closing correctly and Wilmar was over to correct it the next day! Very professional and skilled at what they do. Wilmar really knows his stuff!. Dependable, honest, personable ….so easy to work with. I will definitely use them in the future."

Drywall questions, answered by experts

Plastering and skimming are two different techniques for finishing walls. Plastering involves applying a thick layer of a plaster mixture—typically containing gypsum, lime, cement, sand, and water—to create a new surface. This process often requires multiple coats and is used for repairing significant damage or creating decorative textures. Skimming, on the other hand, is a technique that involves applying a thin layer of drywall compound or joint compound over an existing surface to smooth it out, covering minor imperfections, small cracks, or uneven textures for a polished look. Plastering is generally more costly and labor-intensive than skimming. Although some people use the terms interchangeably, they refer to different processes and materials.

There are six levels of drywall finish, from 0 to 5, that refer to the amount of work performed during the finishing process.

Level 0: Drywall is hung with no finishing work.

Level 1: Tape is placed over the seams between drywall sheets.

Level 2: A thin layer of mud is applied over the tape and screw holes. This level is common for utility rooms or walls that will be covered.

Level 3: A full coat of mud covers the screw holes and tape, but the surface is not sanded. This is often used in garages.

Level 4: This is the most common finish for visible interior walls. It involves applying two coats of mud over seams and screw holes, with sanding between each coat, creating a smooth surface ready for flat paint.

Level 5: This is a high-end finish for luxury homes. It includes full taping, mudding, and sanding, plus a final skim coat over the entire surface before painting.

Drywall can get wet and dry out without sustaining permanent damage, but only if the water damage is minor. If you have a small leak and are quick to correct the issue and set up blower fans and dehumidifiers, your drywall should dry out. If the leak is persistent, the drywall becomes totally waterlogged, or mold begins forming on the drywall, you should remove and replace it.

Plaster walls typically last between 30 and 70 years, but depending on the quality of the materials and the moisture levels in the building, they can last for over 100 years. With expert application and consistent maintenance, plaster can even last for centuries. To extend its lifespan, it is important to have the plaster professionally installed, address any water damage promptly, and repair small cracks as they appear. Regular inspections by a professional can help identify and address concerning cracks before they become significant issues.

You should start looking for a drywall installer by choosing a local company with positive online reviews and ratings with the Better Business Bureau (BBB). Next, confirm that the professional is properly licensed using Angi’s contractor licensing tool, and ask the installer if they are fully insured. It’s a good idea to ask for recent customer references and call them to get their honest opinion about the contractor and their work. You can also ask the installer if they guarantee their work or provide a workmanship warranty.
