"I turned off toilets from Nov 2012-Jan 19th 2013.  I turned all the water back on when I got home on the 19th of January. In just 10
days left on the City of Baytown billing cycle my water bill was higher than if I had watered my grass in July.  After City of Baytown came to investigate upon my complaint of bill it was discovered while I turned off each valve in the house that 2 toilets were running. One of them was really cranking the water meter the other was a trickle.  I turned them both off and knew I should call a plumber but the fear of the unknown costs and service scared me. So from January 29th - April 8th I used one working toilet which was the
Lav on the first floor.  The Master and Guest toilets upstairs were cut off.  Then on April 8th Direct TV installer asked to use my Lav and broke the 1 working toilet.  The pulley that attaches to the suction cup in the tank and the handle was completely broken off.  I had to submerge my hand & arm in the tank and pull the flapper to get the toilet to now flush.  A review of Angies List in my area was now in order.  Then I looked up the top 10 questions to ask when looking for a Plumber.  Then I looked the 3 I narrowed to on Better Business Bureau.  I then looked up their Licensing info on Texas  State of Licensing (https://licensing.hpc.state.tx.us/datamart/mainMenu.do)  to see their License # and Expiry Date.  I narrowed down to 2 as the third I could not find on BBB Accredited or non-accredited or on the Texas State Licensing site.  A few phone calls later Wedgeworth although closer to me than Bay Coast does not service my area, Lee from Bay Coast Plumbing calling me back.  My fear kicked in about price and how long and when but Lee educated me and tried to put to rest my fairs. Gave me an hourly rate and approx time it may take but advised until someone comes out he is not sure what the time and parts will be but tried his best to estimate.  Advise the Plumber will let me know what needs to be done and how long before he starts.  Lee really worked with me as a Plumber was
scheduled from 1:30-3pmish arrival.  If they arrived at 3pm then I would be screwing over the Women's Shelter in Houston I am scheduled to help feed/serve from 4:30pm.  He then scheduled a Plumber  who lived between my home and the Bay Coast Plumbing office who would service my home on his way to work.  That new schedule was 7:30am.  Peter arrived at 7:20am and called me 10-15 minutes before his arrival.  He was so patient as I had the Direct TV tech (who broke the 1 working toilet the day before) on the phone trying to trouble shoot having no signal.  I showed Peter all 3 toilets while trouble shooting on the phone and he went to work bless his soul without much attention from me.  When I got off the phone I checked in with Peter who was almost complete with the
work.  He replaced all 3 flappers and 2 ballcocks on the Master and Lav bathrooms.  He even tried to help with my questions on how to replace the guest bathroom toilet tank cover that got smashed up when artwork and stones in a vase fell from wall on top of toilet tank. Peter told me try to reach out to Manufacturer that was listed inside the tank.  Turns out only tank that had the info was the one that is cracked.  Peter was fast, efficient, done in less than the hour and explained everything he had to do and what to do to extend the life and the warranty on a valve in the tank by not hanging those harsh chemical bowl cleaners inside the tank as it erodes the valves.  I did not pay hundreds or thousands for a simple job like my fear had me thinking, and did not feel price gouged, but
instead Bay Coast Plumbing made me feel more comfortable about plumbing services and I will definitely use them again and recommend them to anyone in
my area that has plumbing issues.

"Everything went as planned and were finished prior to the timeline that was set out from the beginning. Roberto is very good at what he does and keeps you updated during all phases of the process. We wrestled with the idea of going cheaper and hiring out each phase of the renovation and doing our own general contracting work, but we are very glad we hired Roberto and his guys to help us instead. At no point during the process was i worried the job wouldn't get done in the manner we wanted it done. The master bath vanities and kitchen island were our signature pieces and Ismael and his guys built them exactly the way we wanted. The tiling was done so well we added on installing stone tile on the fireplaces. One of the fireplaces was not up to Roberto's liking so he made the tiler remove it and fix it at his own cost. Roberto looks at the job as what he would want if it were his house, so never had to worry that he would cut corners or let things not be perfect."

"We had several issues that needed to be taken care of as a result of hard to find leak. I made many calls to various companies and handymen to try to get help without getting any satisfaction. I picked JY Handyman Services from Angie’s List and upon meeting Jose he assured me that he could address and fix our concerns. Jose worked on our home in late December and early January when we were having the really cold weather. He did some great trouble shooting, found and fixed the leak, did excellent carpentry, dry wall and painting. Jose and his crew have a great can do attitude and kept me informed throughout the project. I will continue to use JY Handyman Services and recommend them for all general home maintenance and remodeling needs."

"I read the reviews and was going to get a few bids on this project before committing to a contractor. Joe was the first one I called. I decided based on that meeting to go with him. He was very professional and so easy to deal with. He presented options and made recommendations. This made it easy to decide on the best course of action. He inspected all the work and made sure it was done correctly. All his employees worked fast, efficiently, and were polite and respectful. He proved to be a man of his word. Everything he said he would do was done as promised. The value for the cost was excellent. I am very pleased with this project and will use him again."

"The service man was great. First off, when the receptionist said they'd call before the service man arrived, they did! The guy showed up approximately 30 minutes after we called! Very prompt. How often does that ever happen?! He showed up and said the knob was not turned enough toward hot. He said he would not charge us for this. While there, my husband told him our bathtub water has a reddish sediment in it. He checked the water heater and said it's pretty corroded inside and probably needs to be replaced. (Quoted $900) It's 13 years old. He also pointed out a hazard with some piping. Then my husband asked him why our toilet was making so much noise. He told him what was likely wrong, and that he could fix it for about $100 or we could replace it ourselves for about $30.. not a really hard job. He was courteous, intelligent and knowledgeable. No charge for any of this priceless information! We felt kind of embarrassed because we hadn't turned the temperature on the water heater up far enough, but we definitely found a plumber we can trust. We'll definitely call them back!"

"Rob and his crew installed a root barrier to protect the back of our house from foundation problems from a large oak tree.  They also added catch basins to existing drainage pipes as well as replacing some piping where needed.  Rob spent a generous amount of time taking a good look at our property, assessing what would work best and answering all of my questions. I was very pleased with the work done and with the people he has on his crew.

Toilets questions, answered by experts

The average cost to hire a plumber is typically between $45 and $200 per hour, with a common average rate around $125 per hour. This cost can vary based on your location, the plumber's experience, and the complexity of the job. Rates are often broken down by experience level: an apprentice may charge $45 to $90 an hour, a journeyman $60 to $110 an hour, and a master plumber $80 to $200 an hour. While hourly rates are standard, some plumbers may charge a flat fee for routine projects or offer project-based pricing. It's also common for plumbers to charge a minimum service or trip fee. For reference, some typical flat-rate costs for common jobs include: drain unclogging ($220), leaky faucet repair ($270), burst pipe repair ($400), toilet repair ($300), and water heater repair ($600). Note that these rates are for standard service hours; emergency, holiday, and after-hours calls will cost significantly more.

Generally, toilet leaking is not an emergency unless the leakage is severe. However, any leakage at the bottom should be addressed as soon as possible because it could lead to water damage to the floors, under the tiles, or into the walls. Leaks at the bottom can also lead to mold growth if unaddressed.

The amount of water wasted when a toilet ghost flushes depends on the cause of the ghost flushing. Leaky flapper valves tend to waste less water than a larger problem like a damaged flush valve that makes the toilet run constantly. Even if you don’t think you’re wasting a lot of water, it’s still a problem that should be fixed quickly.

Some older homes have toilets in the basement to combat sewage backups. This type of toilet, also known as a Pittsburgh potty, acted as a safety valve over the incoming sewer line. If a line backed up, it would back up into the toilet because it was the lowest fixture in the home, keeping it out of sight and away from the finished areas of the house.

Basement toilets were also used by workers with messy jobs, like those who worked in coal mines or steel mills. This way, they could clean up and avoid tracking dirt through their home.

Yes, and no. Your shower, toilet, and sink all connect to the same main drain, but the secondary drains going from each fixture to the main drain are usually separate. This isn’t always the case—especially in older homes—but since toilets contain black water and showers, tubs, and sinks have grey water, toilets are more regulated and come at a greater risk of contamination. It’s best to keep these drains separate using individual waste collection for this reason.
