I originally called Juan to give me a quote on a lot of work, most notably, my baby nursery. This was in late May with work to be done in a few weeks. Early June comes around, I touch base with Juan, he tells me he can't paint my house because he's got a huge backlog. Fair enough. My wife and I had planned this so we could have enough time before the baby came, so it really wasn't that big a deal. He told me 6 weeks was the earliest he could do it. OK, not ideal, but we would make it work. 6 weeks roll around. I call him, we agree on a date and I am thinking we are good. The date comes, it was the week of July 13th. I call to confirm the day before, no answer. But my wife was able to get him and confirm. Next day comes, he texts my wife 5 minutes before we agree to meet and says he's ill and cant make it. Fair enough, we all get sick. I ask him to please keep me posted on when he will be able to come, assuming it would be in the next day or so. Next day goes by, no communication. Day after that, same thing. Several days go by with me trying to reach him and no response. Finally, I get a text from his wife- which, I have no idea if it was actually her- saying Juan needed surgery and was in Mexico, I should get another painter. Ok, so at this point, I am screwed, but assuming he's actually really sick, then it is totally understandable and I feel for the guy. One month goes by and I decide to check Angie's List to confirm if this story is reasonable or not (this was last week). Looks like he had done jobs since then. So, now I am kinda frustrated. So I try and call, no answer. I text. No answer. Wait a few more days, call and text. No answer. Finally, I send one final text asking why he's avoiding my call. He responds, saying he's sorry/busy and he would call me later that evening (this was last Saturday). No call. I have tried to call/text since then and gotten nothing. So, here I am, still trying to get the stuff I wanted him to do, done. Yet I get no responses. I honestly have no idea why he is not responding. I have been nothing but respectful and professional to him, even referring him to all my friends. Sad thing is, if he were to call me back, I would still want him to do my work! So, if this review seems confusing as h***, well it's not you, it's just a frustrated reviewer. Prior to this latest interaction, would I have recommended Juan?, 100%. Now, unfortunately no. Acting like this is just unacceptable.

Other locations were either impatient with my questions or over priced. Bradford Nursery's prices were VERY resonable, but more importantly they were very helpful and did a good job explaining what materials I would need, gave me different option that would work and a cost range. They were also very accomodating. Originally, I was going to pick up the soil myself. Their delivery cost are very resonable, I would've spent the same on fuel and wasted a lot of time. The morning I was planning to pick up the soil I decided to have them deliver and they were out here a couple of hours later! I know the turn around may not always be that quick if they are busy, but I appreciate that they didn't make me wait. I will continue to use Bradford Nursery! He has a great respect for Angie's List and worked hard to meet the standards of excellence that he felt would get him a good report. When he learned that I had expected the "ecofriendly" mark beside his listing to indicate that he used native plants, he turned around and learned everything he could about native plants.(Sean is from Mississippi, and was less familiar with Texas native plants than he is now.) Fortunately, I am just blocks away from the best native plant nursery in Houston, so Sean began by studying there and then continued on the computer that night. We agreed that since I had some very clear ideas about what I wanted to see in my garden, I would accompany him to the wholesaler. (I'm pretty sure that was Sean's idea -- and a good one.) The result is a lovely garden. I think both Sean and I had some surprises along the way. I would suggest that when a wife has a flat tire, perhaps it would still be possible to work on that day. Other than that, I believe that Sean is well on his way to having a successfully business. I certainly believe I got more than my money's worth. And I have a beautiful garden to enjoy. 11/23/10 Unfortunately, by the end of the summer half of the plants Sean put in were dead. I had asked for an irrigation system that would keep my plants alive during a three week period that I was out of town. At first, while I was still in town, I called Sean and told him that the plants were dying. He came to my house and discovered that he had set the irrigation timer incorrectly. He replaced the plants that had died. Then when I returned from my vacation and found so many plants dead, I called him and invited him to see the results in my garden. He let me know that he was too busy and asked me to take pictures and send them to him. I have not done that. Instead I have found a local landscaper (Ravenscourt Landscaping) who knows the Heights and lives here. I will be using her next time.
6/21/2011 I had blamed last summer's garden's failure to thrive on Sean's choice of plants, However, I have been out of town for a month, happy in the knowledge that having a timer connected to my irrigation system would keep my current garden healthy. I am now dealing with only a limited number of plants -- the survivors. However, when I returned in the midst of a serious drought, I noticed that the plants in the portion of the garden that faced the harsh afternoon sun looked as if they were not getting watered. I checked the garden after the times when the irrigation had run, and I discovered that while you could see dark wet spots in the beds where two soaker hoses went, the crucial bed showed no evidence of being watered. I dug up the hose and found it was not the round soaker hose used in all other beds,, but a flat hose that apparently gave out little or no water. I replaced it with a round soaker hose from the hardware store. I ran it for several hours and could see the wet spots that showed me that my problem was solved. I have no idea why Sean decided to use a different soaker hose for that bed, but it did not work well at all. So, having given some thought to my problem, solved it myself, and seeing improvement in those plants that have survived being without water during this long period, I can only conclude that I've lost a lot of money because of this faulty irrigation system. I had wondered why so many of my plants had died during the year after Sean had corrected his first mistake setting up the irrigation timer. (He had set the timer incorrectly and they were not getting enough water.) I now have a functioning system. But, I don't have a very nice looking garden. I had already begun making plans to work with Ravenscourt Landscaping in the Heights. I've seen several gardens by Ravenscourt, and I know that I can get the garden that I want. My conversations with Laurin Lindsey and Shawn Schlacter (owners of Ravenscourt Landscaping) have indicated that they are very talented and experienced, and I can trust them to do the work correctly."},"url":"https://www.angi.com/companylist/us/tx/humble/summerlin-landscaping-reviews-2293459.htm"},"position":6},{"@type":"ListItem","item":{"@type":"LocalBusiness","name":"Zack's Landscape & Lawn Inc","address":{"@type":"PostalAddress","addressRegion":"TX","addressCountry":"US"},"review":{"@type":"Review","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"PHILLIP W."},"reviewBody":"Zack was referred by another landscaper on Angie's list as he was too busy. We invite you to walk through our beautiful gardens and greenhouses and view the great selection of quality tropical and landscaping plants we offer. Our specialty is bromeliads and we stock one of the largest selections of bromeliads you will find anywhere. We grow hundreds of varieties of Neoregelia, Aechmea, Tillandsia, and other rare and unusual specimen and collector bromeliads. We offer a full spectrum of residential and commercial landscaping services. We were established in 1975 and our business began mainly brokering plants. We bought and transported plants from the Rio Grande Valley, selling them to florists and nurseries in southeast Texas. As the cost of fuel increased in the late 1970's, we realized the focus of our business needed to be reevaluated. We were seeing a lot of small independent nurseries (our customers) were disappearing. Our society was evolving into one dependent upon the big box stores for their plant needs. We understood our business needed to be more versatile, yet still competitive. To be more competitive, we needed to grow more of our own products instead of buying and reselling plants. After more than 30 years, Jimbo's Nursery is still thriving. The plants we are growing includes tropical foliage, bromeliads, palms, shrubs and ground covers.

FAQs for greenhouse and nursery service projects in Tiki Island, TX
Buying plants from a nursery is one thing, but ensuring that they are properly planted is another. While you might not need to hire a landscaper for every plant that you buy from a nursery, it’s a great idea to have their expertise and experience to plant larger items, like burlapped trees or specialty plants like rose bushes. Even better, before making a trip to a nursery to buy new plants, consult a local landscaper to test your soil for pH levels, soil texture, and phosphorus and potassium levels to help determine the best plants for your area.
Garden nurseries offer many plants to make your home and garden flourish. In-container plants are one option, including perennials, annuals, and small shrubs or trees. Large hedge plants and roses are called bare-root plants, meaning they have not been potted. Finally, you will see some burlapped plants, typically larger trees and shrubs with burlap wrapping around the bottom.
The best time to plant is between spring and autumn. Springtime weather is typically mild and is when nurseries start to bloom. When the summer weather arrives and it’s hot out, it’s best to avoid planting bare-root plants, but you can still plant many in-container varieties. The first sign of fall is another great opportunity to plant biennials if you live in southern states, or a lovely vegetable garden up north.
If you’re hiring a landscaper to plant the garden of your dreams, you do not need to provide them with plants that you bought yourself from a nursery. While you certainly can provide your landscaper with plants, keep in mind that some nurseries provide discounts to landscaping companies, therefore potentially lowering your materials cost. Beyond the cost of the plants themselves, you need to have additional materials like topsoil and mulch for the project. Most likely, your landscaper can get a discount on these materials as well, so it’s worth speaking with them before making any large purchases.
While there are over 400,000 different flowering plants worldwide, there are five main types of flowers. These flower types are based on their lifecycles, giving each type a unique personality. These types are:
Annuals, which complete their entire life cycle within a single growing season.
Perennials, which the tops die off in the winter but regrow in spring.
Biennials, which complete their entire life cycle within two years.
Hybrids, which exhibit either annual or perennial behaviors depending on location
Flowering shrubs, which are small to medium-sized perennial woody plants, such as shrubs or evergreens.
