"David with New Growth Landscaping was an outstanding partner for our landscaping project. He quickly responded to both my initial request and to any questions I had. His bid was competitive and his recommendations for plants showed his understanding of the Lubbock climate. He stayed in touch throughout the project, providing updates daily. The design exactly met our requirements and he demonstrated flexibility when we asked to add a drip system to the project. I highly recommend David and his company for any landscape project."

"First, Jay Young Plumbing had a *person* answer the phone and not a synth system. Next, she asked, in a very pleasant way, what all I needed. She then said that she had someone in the area and they could likely be there in an hour or so--after completing a different plumbing task. When the plumber, and his son, showed up at the house, they called first, arrived soon after, were courteous and kind, charged a reasonable price, and were on their way. Within less than I week I received a very kind "Thank you" note and fridge magnet. I was especially impressed with their kind approach that honored my needs and privacy and with their genuine appreciation of my business. You BET I will contact Jay Young Plumbing FIRST next time! ---By the way, 3-4 hours after this was all done and completed, the first plumbing company I contacted finally got back with me. They will not be the first people on my contact list the next time! I am not related to Jay Young Plumbing nor do I get any benefit from my statement. I am just pleased that this company exists!"

Landscaping questions, answered by experts

Grass is the most popular and safest option for planting over a septic drain field, but you can also plant small flowering plants and other lightweight plants that don’t have woody or deep roots. Avoid trees and bushes within 10 feet of the field, as the woody roots can crack the perforated pipes. You should also avoid planting vegetable or fruit gardens over your drain field, as a leak from the pipes could contaminate the soil and put anyone who eats the produce at risk.

A half inch above ground level is ideal for metal edging. This provides enough depth for the edging to hold in place and enough height to keep in most landscaping materials (like mulch or gravel). If you install edging too high off the ground, it will stand out from your landscaping and pose a tripping risk. If you install it too low, your ground cover won’t stay in place.

The best time to plant a tree is in the spring, so the roots have time to grow into the surrounding soil before winter sets in. Some people recommend planting in the late fall. However, planting in the spring reduces the stress on the tree, as it will be emerging from dormancy, giving it the full spring and summer ahead to acclimate and put down roots into the soil.

You'll likely need more than great home staging to sell your home. Now is a great time to get to work on the curb appeal of your home . Hire local exterior painters and landscapers to coat the exterior of your home and bring it new life with some sprucing up.

Unless it only rains once in a blue moon where you live, you’re going to want water-loving plants in your garden bed or pot. A few ideas for plants that aren’t super fast-growing (meaning they’re good in pots or near foundations) and can handle a lot of standing water include:

  • Acorus (Sweet flag)

  • Colocasia esculenta (Taro or elephant ear): In many climates, these are annuals, making them less desirable because you need to adjust the chain again after each replant.

  • Equisetum scirpoides (Dwarf horsetail rush): non-dwarf varieties of horsetail are fast growers and can take over quickly.

  • Juncus effusus (Curly rush)

  • Osmunda regalis (Royal fern): Royal fern can grow quickly but can also handle being crowded, making them good container plants.
