"My yard was a dirt patch full of roots, rocks and stickers. New Growth got me an estimate for a sod install (fescue turf, front and back yard) the day after I called them and were able to start the job in less than a week. The owner, David, was extremely professional and courteous as were all of his crew members. They completed the entire project (which included relatively extensive prep work) in three days, start to finish. My new lawn looks amazing! And the cost was very reasonable. I would very highly recommend New Growth Landscaping."

"Not only were they very informative and educated us on the pond and its workings, they were always prompt and hard working. Their knowledge of their trade was very impressive, strongly recommend this company. Our pond and waterfalls have never functioned as well as they do now."

Landscaping questions, answered by experts

It is possible to plant a tree over a ground stump if it was ground very deeply. However, it is typically best to plant elsewhere so your new tree has room to establish a strong, healthy root system. If you want to plant a tree in the same spot where you currently have a stump, you may want to consider other options, such as stump removal.

If shade is a priority for you, then panting elm trees is a fine choice. A full mature elm tree has enough aesthetic appeal for some folks that it could add value to your home.

That said, never plant elm trees too close to your home, sewer line, or sidewalks, as their roots can damage these, which can lead to costly repairs.

The best type of rock for landscaping depends on your specific project and needs, as different rocks are suited for different applications. For covering large areas or creating an affordable driveway, consider gravel, but note that it can wash away in flowing water. For water features, river rocks are a good option. Flagstone and cobblestone are ideal for aesthetically pleasing patios and walkways. If you are building a stone wall, fieldstone or small boulders are up to the task. Large boulders and landscape rocks work well as statement pieces, to fill empty space, or to indicate boundaries, but be mindful that they can overwhelm smaller gardens. The best approach is to first define your landscaping project and then select the rock type that best fits that purpose.

Unless it only rains once in a blue moon where you live, you’re going to want water-loving plants in your garden bed or pot. A few ideas for plants that aren’t super fast-growing (meaning they’re good in pots or near foundations) and can handle a lot of standing water include:

  • Acorus (Sweet flag)

  • Colocasia esculenta (Taro or elephant ear): In many climates, these are annuals, making them less desirable because you need to adjust the chain again after each replant.

  • Equisetum scirpoides (Dwarf horsetail rush): non-dwarf varieties of horsetail are fast growers and can take over quickly.

  • Juncus effusus (Curly rush)

  • Osmunda regalis (Royal fern): Royal fern can grow quickly but can also handle being crowded, making them good container plants.

Yes, you can hydroseed with a garden hose, but you’ll need a tank or other large vessel for mixing the slurry, then a pump to send the slurry through the hose for spraying. Making your own hydroseeding unit can work, but it’s not usually worth the effort and supplies unless you already have them.
