"Freddy, owner of Above Grade Landscaping is very professional and got the new sprinklers installed in a timely manner and they work beautifully and water the lawn so much more efficiently than the hose system we had before. I would highly recommend Above Grade Landscaping for any work you need done. Rest assured Freddy will meticulously create a beautiful work of art for your yard. He also went above and beyond by putting rocks behind my new shed since I would not be able to mow a 2 foot area of grass on the back and side of the shed, all at no charge. Thank you Freddy for a job well done."

Landscaping questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can put topsoil over sand to encourage grass growth. The topsoil will help to improve water retention and promote grass roots’ development, making it a recommended step of the seeding process. Adding a layer of topsoil will provide additional nutrients to the sandy soil, helping the grass grow and remain healthy through many seasons.

If you’re hiring a landscaper to plant the garden of your dreams, you do not need to provide them with plants that you bought yourself from a nursery. While you certainly can provide your landscaper with plants, keep in mind that some nurseries provide discounts to landscaping companies, therefore potentially lowering your materials cost. Beyond the cost of the plants themselves, you need to have additional materials like topsoil and mulch for the project. Most likely, your landscaper can get a discount on these materials as well, so it’s worth speaking with them before making any large purchases.

The best place to plant a rose bush is where it will be happiest. Growing roses is difficult if the location varies much from what the plants like. Choose a location that gets at least six hours of direct sunlight during the growing season but not much more than that in hot-climate locations. If such a spot doesn't exist in your yard, consider planting your rose in a movable container to take advantage of portability.

Yes, backyard landscaping and total-home landscaping add value to your home. According to the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), high-quality landscape design has a 20 to 30 percent return on investment. So, when it comes time to sell your home, having a beautiful backyard landscaping oasis will increase your home’s value.

As much as you might try to keep a healthy, nutrient-rich lawn, you still may notice signs of St. Augustine decline (SAD)—a viral disease that discolors your grass blades. St. Augustine decline looks like:

  • Discoloration in the leaves (chlorosis)—leaves appear yellow and splotchy

  • Decline in growth

  • Leaves turn black within 3 years

  • Grass appears less vibrant

  • Grass begins to thin

  • Root rot

  • Grass takes longer to recover
