"The work was done in a timely fashion, despite heavy rainfalls the day before. The owner kept me updated throughout the process. I am very satisfied with the completed work. I will recommend this company to others. RB Pearland"

"I needed 4 oak trees pruned and heavily thinned, plus an old pine removed. Oscar gave me a fair quote and a reasonable service date. He showed up right on time, and completed the work and clean up in about seven hours. He delivered on everything he promised and I am quite pleased. I will not hesitate to recommend him to friends and neighbors."

"I used Custom Scapes for repairing my leaking sprinkler system and tree trimming services. Hermes came out and inspected the leak and he went further and made sure the whole system was in good shape to ensure my system had good water pressure. During his diagnosis, he discovered I had another leak on the other side of my lawn which he was able to quickly repair. His crew was able to take care of my trees and they look great. His quote was very accurate and he is a very friendly person to deal with."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

How deep your septic system needs to be into the ground depends on several factors. In extremely cold environments, the tank needs to rest below the maximum frost line, which can be up to six or eight feet deep. The standard burying depth for most systems is between a few inches and four feet below ground level. Depth can also depend on the slope of the landscaping and other property variables.

Some two-in-one tools and machines do both jobs, and those could be the right solution for smaller residential projects. However, the phrase “use the right tool for the job” definitely applies to digging. For the best results, get two separate tools for your trenching and landscape edging projects or call a pro to take care of everything for you.

The best type of soil to build on is a mixture of sand and clay, known as loam soil. Loam soil has the best combination of these soil types to build a foundation on. The clay particles help with water retention, so it won’t erode like sandy soil might, and the sandy particles help with drainage, so you won’t see unsafe soil expansion or have an increased risk of leaks from water sitting against your foundation.

The digging depth will depend on the size of the trencher you use. Even smaller units can dig up to 4 feet deep, which is plenty for a DIY job. However, much larger trenchers can reach a depth of 18 feet and are better used by a team of pro contractors, not a single DIYer. As with all home improvement projects, use the right tool for the job and proceed with caution.

Because decomposed granite is a durable material, a crushed rock or gravel base is optional as long as the DG is properly installed and compacted. However, installing a base is a good idea because it will ensure proper drainage and stability and act as a weed suppressant (although you may still occasionally have to pull weeds). Installing an adequate base can also increase the durability of driveways and walkways. If you forego the paver base or gravel underneath, line the area with landscaping fabric to avoid weeds.
