"The pro has been servicing our Mclean property quite well for a couple of years. Our lawn looks good and we are satisfied with the service. The customer service is sometimes underwhelming but it gets the job done at a reasonable cost which is really becoming harder by the day to get."

Petty's Irrigation is the largest landscape development company in East Texas. We sell and install the best irrigation and sprinkler systems as well as professional landscape design and installation. When it comes to designing, installing and maintaining the best sprinklers, irrigation, or landscaping, Petty's Irrigation ranks number one for our customer satisfaction, expert help, and great prices.

"The service techs arrived on time. Before doing any work the tech told me the system was old and needed to be replaced. I asked him to check the system and he reluctantly opened the service panel and stated there was insufficient power (no transformer) to check and went back to his truck. I reviewed the instructions on the inside of the panel and pointed out the system had power and the transformer was inside the control box. The tech came back and tested the system. There were 6 zones. He found the first zone has a faulty valve that was stuck open. 2 sprinkler heads were broken. The tech walked around and kicked at a few sprinkler heads and the tech again stated he recommended a new system at $2100.00. I asked for the existing system to be repaired and he shrugged his shoulders. He was not interested in discussing repairs, only a new system. I explained that I wanted to save the existing system if possible and asked for a quote to repair. He again shrugged his shoulders. I asked if he was telling me he did not want to do the repair work and only wanted to sell a new system. He shrugged his shoulders, nodded his head. I stated I would seek quotes for repair. He shrugged his shoulders and asked me to pay the service call charge of $89.75. I paid it, but it really felt like I just paid for a new system sales pitch from a company not willing to estimate cost of or do repairs."

"Started off good but as time progressed got worse. Lawn guys ran over out tree concrete trim and destroyed it. Ran over our telephone pedestal and left it. Would rinse themselves off after mowing and left the water faucet on. After we had wrapped it for winter they unwrapped and left the wrapping off. Contract stated brush piles would be picked up and weren't. Had contacted several times and six months later after their piles picked up they finally picked up their piles of stuff they left. Would not recommend them. Tree jobs were a different story. They did an excellent job on cutting down trees and cleaning up their mess. Excellent tree people but don't hire for yard work!!!"

Additional DBA - The Shelburne Co Inc. Retail store hours March-September.

"I placed an order for 75 super plugs (for $97.50) and their stimu-root product along with a couple of other items. 2 days later they released a promo code where if you buy 105 super plugs for ($95.00) you get 2 stimu-roots for free! I called customer service and the lady that always answers the phone was the opposite of helpful. I asked if I could use the promo code but my order had already shipped so "she was unable to do anything to help". She also said my order was not even close to what the promo was for... what do you mean not even close.. it was the same thing but 30 plugs less and I overpaid by a lot! Horrible customer service! I haven't even received my products yet but I've now been reading their other poor reviews I'm not looking forward to it. Do not use them for your zoysia needs!"

Lawn Fertilization and Treatment questions, answered by experts

If maintained correctly, natural grass should last between five and 15 years, or up to several decades, depending on your home’s climate conditions. You can extend your grass’ lifespan by treating it well, including regular mowing, weeding, watering, and preventative pest control. Consider hiring a local lawn care service to provide everything your grass needs to live a long, healthy life.

Costs depend on property size, service frequency, and additional tasks like aeration or overseeding.

You can fertilize right after mowing as long as you've collected the clippings. If you leave grass clipping, they can form a mat that prevents the fertilizer from reaching the soil. Plus, grass clippings are rich in nitrogen, so if you leave them and then apply fertilizer, you can end up with too much nitrogen in the soil.

If your grass is stressed from being over-trimmed, try watering it heavily and then allowing it to recover for at least two weeks before mowing again. If you notice brown patches where the grass has died off because it’s too short, you should remove the dead grass and overseed the area. Leaving dead patches can invite weeds and other problems, so if you want a totally green lawn, getting rid of dead patches should include removing the dead sections before reseeding the area.

While you may see some germination by simply tossing a handful of new seeds on a lawn, you'll have more success by following the proper reseeding or overseeding process step-by-step. Without properly tilling, mowing, amending the soil, and watering your lawn, the new seed could blow away or simply fail to take root.
