"Montana’s did a superior job on the design and plans for my bardominium buildout project. Greg was very attentive to details, professional, timely and thorough. He made the process so much easier by bringing in his expertise of being a hands on builder for many years giving him a more well rounded understanding of construction. I highly recommend using them for your next residential or commercial project."

Small jobs welcome

"I originally hired a different designer to create my house plans. Only after much time and money spent creating engineered framing plans did the fact come out that particular house/plan would have been costly and tricky to build. Sam was recommended to me- and I got the whole package. A holistic approach of wants/needs vs. cost from an empirical approach to the whole lifecycle of a house build. No gotchas along the way (trust the science) and ultimately I got the house that I wanted with the budget I had to work with. I can honestly say- the only reason I was able to build my own custom home was due to Samà ¢à  à  s analytical mind coupled with his love of geeking out about structural engineering/home building. Would recommend Sam to anyone going down this crazy path of building your custom home."

"Mario did an excellent job making a pier and beam foundation for my future home. He replied quick (during the holidays as well), and was very communicative. He worked around my budget without any issues. After many attempts of looking for someone to do this for my new home, Mario was the right man for the job. Would definitely call him again for any future projects."

"Very efficient, fast. Made the process easy and was done professionally. I have worked with others and they seemed to drag the process out. He met virtually and made adjustments per my input on the spot. He also met with us in person. He took our suggestions and completed the project to our expectations."

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

No, beams are the primary load-bearers for flooring or roofing systems, and they distribute the weight of the structure to your foundational supports, while joists bear far less weight and distribute their loads to the beams. Beams are usually thicker and longer, and they have support posts or foundation walls beneath them for support.

Yes, all states require structural engineers to carry the proper license, with specifics determined by each state. You can use Angi’s state licensing tool to confirm that the structural engineer you’re considering holds the required licensing to tackle your job. Hiring an unlicensed structural engineer will not only cause issues with permits but it could also lead to an unsafe building. The cost of a professional, licensed, and experienced engineer is well worth the investment.

Foundation cracks that are 1/8 inch wide or less, aren’t uneven across the gap, and don’t continue widening over time are usually just normal settling cracks and don’t suggest structural issues. Horizontal cracks and stair-step cracks on foundation walls, any cracks that continue widening, are wider than 1/8 inch, or where one side juts out beyond the other, are often indicative of structural damage.

The process of hiring a structural engineer starts by finding reliable professionals in your area and comparing quotes from at least three of them. From there, you can narrow down your selection by asking some leading questions:

  • Do you have experience working in my specific area?

  • Do you have professional indemnity insurance?

  • What will your structural report cover?

  • Do you charge a flat fee for a structural report or by the hour?

  • How long have you been in business?

  • Do you have a list of customer references?

Yes. Foundation walls are always load-bearing.
