"Don’t use OGD! We have paid them $895 since September and our garage door opener doesn’t work at all and they’ve stopped returning our calls! 9/18/20 Had OGD come out to service an existing door and evaluate the garage door opener attached that had not been used in years. We had just completed an overhaul of all the siding on the garage and were ready to start using it. The garage door was serviced, and we were advised the existing garage door opener was in good shape to last for years longer and to buy clickers for it online since it is so old they don’t stock that vintage (in hindsight possibly if it’s so old the clickers are not easy to find we should have pushed to replace it??) 12/14/20 Clicked our opener sometime before this date and the motor did not smoothly open the door but rather the garage door become crooked, halfway open popping off several of the rollers. The technician was able to come out on 12/14. Technician did not mention a fault with the garage door opener, just that the limiter had moved from vibrations from it so the opener was opening it too far up and trying to close it further than it could go creating the problem. This also ruined the flexibility in several panels so we scheduled to have a new crossbar installed across the entire door. 12/31/20 Technician came out to install the new crossbar and to make sure the system was set for us to begin using again. We were told everything was good, and we shouldn’t encounter any more problems. 1/3/21 Came home and closed the garage. Saw my cat run in before it fully closed, and realized my phone had fallen out in the car. Clicked remote less than a minute later to re-open. Nothing. No noise, no movement. OGD says it is open on Sunday so I called them for advice to get the door open before work at 8am Mon, for the phone and the car. This detached garage doesn’t have another entrance. We were told at 3 and 4 pm that they understood this was an emergency and someone would be in contact. At 5 the phone started going straight to voicemail. No one ever called us back. 1/4/21 Called OGD at 8am and the person who answered the phone told me that they would not be able to help me “break into” a garage and no one would come out. Even for an existing client. Asked for a manager. Was not called back. Successfully broke into my garage. Called every two hours to see if a manager would talk to me. Never spoke to one, but was offered a late appointment with a technician. The technician was able to come out in the evening and confirmed 1) the door is safe, even after I broke in and works perfectly 2) the garage door opener is old and no longer works. When the button is pushed it now either grinds, is silent, or tries to work but can’t. Since 1/4/21 We have spoken to a couple of people that said they were going to consider replacing our unit. Since Wed. 1/6/21 we have not had our calls returned or been contacted by OGD. Bad advice to not replace the unit lead to a hugely expensive repair of the system that is more than the cost of a standard new opener! Had to push to even have someone come out to see if the door was safe when it quit working 4 days after they were here!"

Garage Doors questions, answered by experts

You can expect your seal to last anywhere from 1 to 5 years. Several factors affect this—material, frequency of use, and the weather. For example, seals made from high-quality rubber are built to withstand the elements and can go the distance with a little TLC. If your door sees a lot of action or faces extreme heat or cold, the seal could wear out more quickly. Regular maintenance—like cleaning and lubrication—can make your seal last longer. And while it’s rare, a professionally installed seal on a smooth floor can potentially last up to 10 years.

How often you clean your garage depends on what you do in there and its overall level of disarray. You should clean the garage once every season, though some experts say every month. Decluttering and deep-cleaning once a year is enough for garages used primarily for storage, but if you do car maintenance or other hands-on project in the space, you’ll need to clean more frequently.

You’ll want to use a sprayer to paint your garage door, especially if the door has panels and other details. A sprayer can get those hard-to-reach places much easier than cutting in with a brush or trying to roll the paint. Once you get comfortable using a sprayer, you’re more likely to get a smooth, professional-looking finish. However, a paint roller will also work if you’ve got a flat garage door or if you don’t have access to a sprayer.

A garage door panel is a section of the garage door that spans the width of the door and connects to other panels above and/or below to create a folding door. The panels usually each have rollers on the sides that fit into the tracks and direct the sectioned door to open and close while remaining in balance.

There are many signs that your garage door needs to be replaced, including: Visual signs of wear and tear Garage is slow to open and close or won’t open or close at all Jerky motions while operating Loose tracks or broken or worn rollers Uneven garage door when open or closed Sagging garage door Noisy operation even after lubricating the moving parts Broken or loose cords Higher energy bills, which could mean poor sealing or insulation
