"I cannot say enough kind words about the experience I have had with TWS Fence. Let’s start with Jefry was faced with - I had an existing chainlink that was never completed. We needed to secure the sides so my small dogs wouldn’t get out and create a swinging gate to span a 5’ opening with slope. Additionally, we had a retaining wall and the AC condenser in the way on the other side. What posed a challenge to me and prior owners was no challenge at all for Jefry at TWS. Jefry asked a lot of questions to determine the best course, he listened to my needs and came up with a fantastic solution. My dogs are secure, my landscaper can get his riding mower into the backyard (huge plus!) and it looks great. It also doesn’t distract from the street view. When the gates needed an adjustment Jefry didn’t hesitate, he didn’t complain, and he came over the same day. I have a lot of experience with contractors and TWS tops them all. It’s not as common for Dutch elm disease to affect other types of trees, especially if the surrounding trees aren’t elms. However, it is possible for DED to spread to other trees, particularly in northern states, like Minnesota. In fact, it’s a good idea to use geography to identify wood and determine which types of trees are in your yard. 

Unfortunately, the complex and shallow root system of elm trees makes surrounding elm trees particularly vulnerable to DED. Early discovery is key!

A tree growing close to a house can cause problems, but cutting it down isn’t always the best solution. Trees planted close to your home could damage your foundation as their roots grow. In addition, they can drop large branches on your house, make it easier for critters and insects to access your home, and encourage mold growth. But if the tree has been there for a long time, it may not pose a risk to your foundation, and it could be more beneficial—not to mention cheaper—to strategically trim it instead. Your best bet is to consult an arborist for advice.

Generally, you should prune around 20% of an apple tree’s growth—and never more than 30%. This means that if you have a severely overgrown tree, it can take a few seasons to prune it back enough to produce the healthiest fruit. 

If you’re dealing with a newly planted or juvenile tree, hold off on pruning beyond the initial shaping. Wait at least a couple of seasons into fruit production since pruning can increase the number of water sprouts and unproductive foliage.
