"I called SETCON to come out & replace/paint an interior door; they also fixed my garage door hardware, my kitchen cabinet so it sits flush, & replaced my light kit in my ceiling fan. I found their prices to be very reasonable! They look/act professional, ethical, respectable, clean, & very cute! They drive professional nice vehicles & look/act totally trustworthy. This is the first handyman service in my 40 years of adulthood that I would strongly recommend & be loyal to. "Roger did what he said and it looks very nice. The front of the house no longer shows mildew so that it doesn’t distract from my new landscaping. This was phase 2 of projects with Roger and Magic Touch. First home, been here some years. “You’ve got to keep up with the maintenance.” After issues with other businesses who don’t do all that they say they can, or that paint they used on my deck that did look great for about 3 months, but after that, they will not return calls, or just cannot be located, it’s a relief to work with Roger."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Wood decks need to be replaced every 10 to 15 years on average. Natural wood is highly vulnerable to infiltration and damage from moisture, which can occur rapidly due to exposure to outdoor elements. You can protect your deck and maximize its lifespan by sealing it every year or two.

What goes under your floating deck depends on your preferences. Some homeowners put landscaping fabric underneath their decks to prevent weeds from popping up through the boards. Others choose to build a floating deck over grass or gravel. However, it’s best not to set your deck directly on the ground. Instead, set your deck on blocks to keep it elevated enough to prevent moisture from rotting the wood.

There are a variety of second-story deck privacy ideas depending on your budget and aesthetic. For starters, you might consider fencing or tall privacy railing that masks a good portion of the open deck. A pergola or an awning can provide additional cover and shade. Outdoor curtains are an easy way to add or remove privacy at your convenience, plus they’re a wallet-friendly way to decorate your deck.

Yes, it is generally safe to have a fire pit on a deck, but you must adhere to building codes and take several safety precautions. For both built-in and freestanding models, you must use a heat-resistant barrier, such as a fire pit pad or heat shield, between the pit and the deck. Additionally, consider the weight of the fire pit and ensure your deck can structurally support it, reinforcing it if necessary. The fire pit must also be positioned a safe distance from your house, particularly from materials like vinyl siding, to prevent heat damage.

The proper and most comfortable height for a deck stair riser, also called a step, is between four and seven inches. A height of seven inches is often considered ideal for a strain-free step that minimizes the risk of trips and falls. While it is possible to have risers up to 12 inches, this height can be challenging for children, pets, or individuals with mobility issues. For optimal safety and comfort, pair a seven-inch riser with a tread depth (or run) of at least 10 to 12 inches. Always check your local building codes, as they may have specific requirements that differ from these general recommendations.
