Tried to contact the project manager through both the job supervisor as well as the person who schedules the jobs to no avail. They promised he would call me to discuss but he never did. Mr. Bonner came in with enthusiasm, telling me how they could turn my yard into a masterpiece and that he had a pond expert that couldn't wait to design my water-feature. He said that now was the time to do it because he could give me off season pricing and some cash discount. The only drawing of the proposed landscape was one that I had designed to show them what I wanted. Since there was no plan drawn up, I needed to stay around at all times to direct the work. Throughout the job the supervisor would mention that "this might be a little bit of an upgrade" Not once was an amount given to the supposed upgrades until I was presented with the final bill which showed $28,440.00 worth of upgrades. Some were legitimate but much of the cost was extremely inflated and items were charged for that I didn't receive. First came the water feature that consisted of a top waterfall that ran about 15 feet into a koi pond. They spliced the liner at the bottom of the pond because they were trying to use leftover pond liner from a previous job. It immediately collapsed and had to be redone. The top waterfall leaked and had to be redone. He charged me $2,250.00 to "redo the pond". The finished pond immediately turned stagnant. When I went to a water feature expert I learned that the pump and skimmer were not only installed incorrectly but were not sufficient and that it should have a complete filtration system. $1,000.00 later and a lot of work I now have a working but unfinished pond. I was charged $850.00 for commercial grade weed barrier under ALL mulch areas. I only have two areas under trees that are done correctly. I have 8 areas with absolutely no weed block and 4 areas where it was partially covered. There are places where there are 3 inch gaps between the weed block and the house and gaps where it was spliced together and not overlapped. The weed barrier is as much as an inch away from the edging in many places which allows weeds to grow inside of the edge of the bed where it has to be hand weeded. As they were mulching the main front bed I noticed that there was no weed barrier on a third of it. They said that they had run out but would get more before the rest of the mulch was put down. Long story short, mulch was deceptively dumped over the bare bed and I now have weeds and stickers growing thick. Because I have an ailing husband and I am in my 60's I was striving for a less labor intensive front yard. Yesterday I was finally able to get out there and weed. Several hours later, exhausted and covered with fire ant bites, I had a pile of weeds that was enough to fill a 30 gallon trash can. Some of the mulch is so thin it barely covers the weed barrier. A full load of mulch that I paid for was dumped in the vacant lot next to me. The flower beds were filled with top soil instead of bedding soil. It is so gummy and clay filled that I have to dig it out and replace it with garden soil where ever I put a plant. The grass was delivered a week and a half prior to installation, I was told that because it was dormant it wouldn't hurt it to sit that long. It has pulled through but I was charged full price, $225.00 a pallet for dormant grass that I have since learned was discounted to Mr. Bonner during the winter season. My irrigation system is a mess also. I was assured that the irrigation man was a specialist. When I told him that it would be hooked up to a well as soon as we could get it in he told me he didn't know how to hook to a well. He obviously was not a specialist because the way he set up the drip stations has already caused the pump to burn out. When it came time to connect it to the newly installed well Mr. Bonner refused to send somebody out to show me where I should connect on. I had to remove sod and dig trenches until I was able to find the connecting place. Many of the station covers are down in the ground 6" to 8" deep and there are areas that are sunk down because of poor back fill. Some of the heads need to be adjusted, the drip system was never completed and he took all of the materials that I would need to be able to finish it myself. He refuses to honor the warranty and fix these issues. I have had to hire an irrigation service to come out and deal with some of the more pressing issues. The stepping stone path that I'd asked for became an $870.00 flagstone walkway that I didn't even want and intend to have torn out and replaced with stepping stones. They put a river rock edging in an area that I had told them should be made to match the other side and now will need to be redone. I could go on forever. I am left with unfinished pathways, an unfinished irrigation system, a rain drainage system that was left incomplete and covered up so that the rain is washing out underneath the cement steps, a driveway that is scraped up and a pile of rocks, dirt and debris that was dumped in the adjacent vacant lot. The only completed work is the rock and iron wall and fence that he subcontracted out which was originally bid at $3,600.00 and was "upgraded" to $9,400.00. I have been told by Mr. Bonner that he is "done with me" unless I agree to pay him another $10,000.00. He is now the new owner of Schulz Nursery in Marion. I hope he is more ethical in his dealings with his nursery customers than he has been with me. We had been dealing with the communication company which was used by the builder of our home and they were totally unresponsive and untimely. It was ironic that they finally contacted us via e-mail the night before Protech was to do our agreed upon install, they took two weeks to get back to us. This was not the case with Robert, once he contacted me, we discussed what I wanted and submitted an initial proposal. The first proposal had all of the bells and whistles, but I discussed my budget with Robert with the emphasis on having a particular projector. Robert came back with a great trade off on equipment to give us the most bang for the buck. The price was right and we agreed to proceed with the project. Mind you Robert and his coworker (I believe Eddie) drove from Houston, where Protech Communication is located. They arrived a little bit late but called before the agreed schedule to let me know they were on the way. Once they arrived, Robert took a look at the media room, attic and area. He showed me the equipment to be installed and explained in detail all that was to be done.. They went to work and worked diligently running the wiring for the media room, checking with me on the placement of the speakers and all. They worked all day because the room had to be completely re-wired. After all was done, there was a problem with the DVD player and Robert went out to purchase a replacement. The DVD still did not work, but had to have the software up dated which they did on the spot. After all was complete Robert made sure the speaker sound was balanced and provided a demonstration of all components (wii, Xbox, Apple TV,and universal remote) and most importantly the projection system and amp. They installed the TV in the family room and set the wiring up for the cable company. After Robert and Eddie left we received a text from Robert asking if we were happy with with the install, and thanking us for the opportunity as well as letting us know that he is just a call away if we need any help with anything. This was a truly professional company, which starts with it's people. Because of Protech Communication's outstanding customer service, my wife and I have renewed hope in using contractors and now know there are companies out there that care about what they do, and will go the extra mile to give you the very best service...even if they have to drive from Houston. Service can be a crap shoot. Parrot gave me clear options with clear consequences so I could analyze the situation to make sound decisions bringing our neglected pool back to life . I was not pressured, or encouraged to do more than what was required. The owner did, however, let me know that sometimes the least expensive direction may have more expensive long-term undesirable problems. Since I don't live in Houston, nor at the location of the pool, I had to trust work was being done as agreed. From everything I could tell upon later visits, Parrot made good on every promise and executed the job competently, pleasantly, in due time. The owner takes a personal interest in his clients, coming to the house himself to make the bid, to check on progress of the repairs and remained in contact regarding work being done. He was knowledgeable, comfortable talking about the issues, and kept me informed so that I could stay "on the same page" with him during explanations and decisions. The only part of my experience that was disappointing was he is so busy that the company's billing is done all but manually, resulting in my debit card being charged when we'd agreed upon a check payment for a large down payment. That wouldn't bother me normally but the debit card had a daily limit and I was taking care of estate issues for my dad traveling 200+ miles back n forth. I could have been embarrassed & frustrated at a retail store or stranded at a gas station when the daily debit limit was used. We'd arranged to tell me it's time for a check which I could've given him right away. With the exception of that particular communication let down, most all other communications have been adequate. It is for that snafu in communication and the out dated means of billing that I rated professionalism lower than other ratings. In every other way, he is quite professional and appears to open to learning from any mistakes, always looking for ways he can improve office activities when he can devote the time. Pool service is demanding and difficult managing a team that's spread all over the city. However, he does appear to stay on top of his 'guys'. He expects them to do the job as he would. He tends to hire like minded employees. Recently, I've had to ask for more mechanical additions to enable water to be added in my absence. I was informed of the problem by a respectful call from the employee assigned to my pool's maintenance. I haven't seen the work yet. I would've liked a followup call to say the solution had been put into play. I'll report if there's a prob. I'm trying to say that I felt I could trust solving the problem of evaporation between maintenance visits to have been solved without taking advantage of me while understanding the difficultly of running an elderly parent's pool remotely. I like to communicate with most people with brief exchanges in a text. He seems to gladly use texts as well-or at least for my convenience. I've been out of commission with surgery, resulting in slow pay this fall (ironic, huh?) To his credit he's been kind and patient. They finished it in TWO DAYS! I was thrilled. The morning they arrived I opened my door to see an army of men busily getting down to work. These guys know exactly what they're doing. There was no confusion, dawdling or goofing off - the crew is all business. (Not to say your life won't be disrupted - but I'll take two days of chaos versus the two weeks one of the other firms advised me it would take.) it was fascinating watching them drive the steel piers into the ground - 20 ft. in my case to bedrock. The entire house shook as they hammered each steel pier down - 24 total - completely surrounding the house. The results were almost immediate as they began to lift. No more cracks in the walls and ceiling, doors opened and closed freely, no bumps in the floor - amazing! Superior gives you a lifetime guarantee - transferable if you sell the house to the next tenant. They came in after all was said and done and showed me with their monitoring equipment what had been previously 2 to 3 inch off angle slopes was now virtually indistinguishable. Great job and totally satisfied. (Two caveats: Protect whatever yard plants and lawn you don't want trampled to death. Go ahead and fence off. This army of workers was efficient and hard-working - but they don't take great care to step around your petunias, etc. Just protect what needs protecting. Also, after 60 some odd years I found out the cast iron pipes under my house were leaking. A virtually guaranteed occurrence. Be prepared to shell out for plumbing repairs as well. SUPERIOR works with RAPID ROOTER plumbing and they did a splendid job of fixing me all up underneath - just be prepared. (Also, I found out my house insurance covered "tunneling and backfill" for the plumbing work so I got back $2500. Be sure and check your policy!) I am owner-operated business. I am Southern Guy's Landscaping & Design. www.southernguys.org. We hold a commercial and residential licenses under Texas department of Agriculture for herbicide. I been in Business over 5 years. We specialize in mowing, fertilizer, herbicide, rock work, stone work, all types of fencing, French drain, Tree work, landscaping and irrigation.
"I have used Southern Guys Landscaping (Joe O) for two projects. The first project was a french drain with multiple downspout captures routed into the french drain. The design concept was really neat with videos provided showing how it worked. I was impressed with the quality of the materials and the quality of the installation. I was impressed with the entire experience so I had them bid the construction of a firepit area with round limestone brick boarder, black star gravel, and CUSTOM pavers. Came out really pretty but most importantly, the construction (footers, landscape fabric, rebar ... etc) was top notch construction. They are now my go-to Guys!!!"

Wrought Iron questions, answered by experts
While many fence companies and fence material retailers refer to their metal fencing as wrought iron fencing, most of it is actually ornamental wrought iron fence. This means that the fence is made to look like traditional wrought iron but is actually made out of either steel or aluminum.
Old wrought iron fences typically found at estate sales or on older properties are much heavier and much more prone to rust than the ornamental wrought iron that newer homes and fences use.
Galvanized metal, vinyl, and composite fences are known to last the longest out of all types of fences. These fence types will last well over 30 years with proper care. Galvanized metal doesn’t attract pests and has a special coating to better withstand weather. Vinyl and composite materials are pest-resistent and will withstand harsh weather for many years.
The most common type of metal fence today is one made of either steel or aluminum. These materials are relatively easy to fabricate, making them much more cost-effective than traditional metal fencing handmade from wrought iron. They’re also much lighter and easier to install, contributing to their affordability and making them more DIY-friendly.
You can buy wrought iron fencing from a trusted fence installation company near you. You could also opt to buy it privately from a homeowner who is interested in recycling their own wrought iron materials. Manufacturers stopped mass production of wrought iron as steel became more affordable to produce, so you likely won't find it in any local big box stores.
You don't need gravel under metal fence posts, but it's always a good idea to add it in. Adding about six inches of gravel before you pour concrete will provide better water drainage, which can help to prolong the lifespan of your new fence and maximize its stability.
