Small jobs welcome

"Cory did 3.5 days solid of MASTER carpentry work on my home: replacing damaged wood, siding, rebuilding soffits, rebuilding trim, etc. His workmanship is unparalleled- wonderful attention to detail and very creative in problem solving some troublesome outside areas of my older home. Heâ s not afraid of working at heights- comes fully prepared with a modern array of tools. He is excellent at communication from start to finish. I couldnâ t be happier with his services!!! Thanks Cory!!"

"Mike Griffin and his team do great work - a few years ago we had them build a garden gate and gazebo, working from our design ideas and taking it to an artistic level - we still get compliments on the gate with its unique grille design! This latest job was mostly repair of an older deck including a new cover, a water-damaged patio enclosure and replacing a section of fence. So, a diverse set of building repair skills/techniques, all handled by Mike's crew in one job. John's masonry repair on the patio post is excellent, for example. Mike is very thoughtful and creative about problem-solving with older homes that have been remodeled several times. He assessed some roof damage as well and gave me advice on when it should be replaced."

"Prestige Fence & Deck is a great company, Jon and his crew did an excellent job replacing my old wooden fence, I was so impressed with their workmanship that I had them rebuild my Patio deck and gazebo, they did a fantastic job on both and added beauty to my back yard, plus the price was super reasonable. "I hired Ernest to do multiple jobs preparing my home to list including framing, drywall, tile and painting. I live in the DFW area and I was nervous about coordinating all of this work at a distance. Ernest was great at communicating with me through the whole process via text and phone. He provided detailed quotes via email so I could see exactly what the scope of work entailed. He gave me regular updates including photos and videos on the progress of the work, giving me peace of mind. He was very flexible working around my tenants move out/clean up schedule. All the work he did looks great, and I know it will add value to the home. He definitely takes pride in his work, and it shows in the finished product. I recommend their services, and I won't hesitate to call if further work is needed!"

"In addition to the roof repair, AA reinstalled 2 lightning rods on the roof. They also replaced rotted wood on three dormers and the hips on the upper balcony with Hardi-plank and painted them. Installed some new flashing as well. When I requested a quote, David responded quickly and was right on time for the first visit. Luis headed up the work and he and his crew were professional and fast. I would (will) hire these guys in a minute,"

"Joseph and team did a great job on re-building my deck, the work quality was excellent. Fantastic job on both the carpentry and the tile work on the out door kitchen/grill. The price was reasonable, great communication and a genuinely good group of people to work with. I would definitely hire them for other remodeling jobs and recommend this company."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

There are approximately 5.33 board feet in a 2x4. You can use the board foot calculator in this article to easily find the answer. A 2x4 is 2 inches of thickness by 4 inches of width, so you need to find the length, with 8 feet being the most common. You’d use the calculator here to multiply 2 times 4 times 8, and then divide by 12, arriving at a total of 5.33 board feet.

Begin by analyzing the blueprints and gathering the proper materials before framing a house. With the prep stages behind you, begin by framing the floor of a house on the newly set foundation. Exterior and interior walls come next, along with rough openings for doors and windows. Contractors will then add ceiling and roof rafters to finish things off.

It’s sometimes safe to replace a load-bearing wall with a beam, but you need a structural engineer to sign off on the project. You’ll also likely have to upgrade to a steel I-beam or another material that’s stronger than wood to maintain the level of support you need without the wall underneath.

You should avoid drilling or cutting into load-bearing beams because removing material will weaken it and increase the risk of structural damage or even collapse. If you do need to drill into a load-bearing beam, speak with a structural engineer first to discuss where it’s safest to drill and the width and depth of the bit that’s safe to use.

Bow windows need support because they are large and extend out from the exterior wall of the home. Bow windows may extend 1 foot to several feet from the outside of the home, so you’ll need to provide additional support to handle this weight. A window contractor will be able to provide the proper amount of support for your new bow window.
