Customers say: Quality work

"Extremely professional. Advised me on the scope of my project, communicated in advance and planned well, showed up on time, and fairly priced. He also repaired my wall to make it seem as though there had been no damage. He will be my go to guy for all painting / drywall projects going forward. Highest recommendation!"

"Victor and his crew were great! We had 2 large rooms and a small 1/2 bathroom painted. In addition to the walls, we had them do the trim, the ceilings, and the doors. They arrived at 7:30 AM and finished EVERYTHING at 4 PM same-day. They did a GREAT job! Definitely will be hiring again in the future!"

"I called several companies on Angie's List and received several quotes. Tecton Stoneworks provided the cheapest quote. Several of the other companies would not attempt to repair the current column and tried to get me to replace it at a higher cost. Tecton was able to repair it without issue."

"The SRM team completed wall repair and painting in various rooms. The owner also laid tile in the Master bedroom. My first look at the completed tiled floor brought tears to my eyes, because the job was done with such skill and excellence. The paint and repair part of the project was also done well with an eye for detail. Charles and his assistant also made sure that they left the work area clean. If youâ  re looking for someone who demonstrates, professionalism, great personality, excellent skills and with an eye for details, please contact this company. You wonâ  t be disappointed."

Wall Repair questions, answered by experts

The longevity of flood walls depends on how they were constructed, but most wood, gravel, and cement flood walls last 10 years. While aluminum flood walls may cost far more initially, they can be a good investment as they can last decades and will not be damaged by exposure to the elements.

Generally, a railroad tie retaining wall consisting of a single line of ties should be between 3 and 4 feet tall—and the height often tops out at around 6 feet. You can go taller, but you may need additional footings and reinforcements, including a second layer of railroad ties to support the added weight of the soil it’s holding back.

Railroad ties can be good for retaining walls, but it depends on the area. They have a desirable rustic look and are durable. The problem is they’re treated with creosote, a preservative the EPA says poses a risk to humans and wildlife. Over time, the preservative seeps out of the wood and into the ground. Many areas have banned the use of creosote-treated wood on residential properties. If your area does allow it, never use railroad ties near an edible garden or drinking water source. Instead, use wood that’s treated with an EPA-approved preservative or a wood-alternative composite material.

Small retaining walls still require a foundation of some kind, typically a concrete footing. This helps to ensure the wall is structurally sound and prevents the ground from shifting over time, especially during those winter freeze/thaw cycles. The footing helps spread the weight of the wall and the load it carries over a larger area of the ground, thus assisting with stability. This is true of small retaining walls, larger rock garden walls, and the like.

Depending on who you hire to build a retaining wall, the average cost, including demolition and reconstruction, for a 50-foot wall that's 4 feet in height is between $7,000 and $24,000.
