Ideally, an AC system should never need more Freon (a popular refrigerant) because it circulates in a closed loop. Signs that your air conditioner capacitor is bad or failing include a range of symptoms. The AC unit may not turn on at all, or it might struggle to start before shutting down randomly or in the middle of a cooling cycle. You might hear a humming or banging noise when it attempts to start, or the compressor might hum without the unit actually running. Other indicators include a smell or smoke coming from the unit, the blower circulating room-temperature air instead of cold air, and an unexpected increase in your energy bills.

A new air conditioner capacitor will cost less than replacing the entire air conditioner system. While a capacitor itself will cost between $8 and $25, paying a professional to replace an AC capacitor will cost $180 on average. It’s not safe to replace an air conditioner capacitor on your own. 

If possible, avoid placing furniture in front of a return air vent. A blocked air vent can cause your HVAC system to use more energy, which in turn can lower the life span of your unit and raise your energy bill. Furniture can also trap hot or cold air, damaging your furniture or appliances. 

Professional duct installers suggest leaving between six and 12 inches of space in front of an air return vent. If you must place furniture in front of a return air vent, try to aim for putting furniture over a floor vent instead of in front of a wall vent, and avoid draping curtains over any vent system.

There are several tell-tale signs that your AC coils need cleaning, including:

  • You’re getting higher electricity bills.

  • Your home doesn’t feel as cool as it usually does.

  • Your AC unit is running longer than usual to cool your home.

  • Your home is more humid than usual.
