"I rarely write reviews, but then again I'm rarely as impressed as I have been with GH Construction.  We've used them on several occasions, for both small and larger projects. Their work is consistently excellent and priced fairly.
Our first project was to repair years of wear and tear on our house. Raising three children, we had dings and dents in our sheet rock and a couple of doors that didn't quite fit anymore. Our back door had a pet door but our dog is long since gone. We also needed a new front door.
The bidding process was hectic and confusing. Tom told us initially what to expect from contractors. He told us if we sat 3-4 appointments, that at least one would no show and another would be late. Our fist appointment never showed up and our third appointment called with car trouble, exactly what  Tom predicted.
When GH arrived on time, we had a smile on our face. He went over ever aspect of our needs. Making suggestions along the way, we saved money before we even got the estimate. Like scraping and painting our front door instead of replacing it. That saved us about $500 right away.
When G.H. got back with us on the bid, it was in a professional proposal. It was printed on a computer very detailed. They also are insured and carry all the licenses to do business in our area. We settled on a price and the work began after only a few days.
The crew showed up and worked a full day. They kept our house as clean as possible and when they did create debris, they cleaned up before they left. The project took the better part of a week and every day they showed up, worked a full day and cleaned before leaving.
They encouraged us to keep a list of the small things we noticed during the job. They called it a punch out list and it works well for us and them. There were only a couple of items and they were fixed easily. We paid the balance on completion and we decided when the job was complete.
We have used them on a couple more projects. A fence and a new garage door and window. We would recommend G.H Construction to anyone looking for a small or large project. If they can make my husband happy, they can make anyone happy. They are just a good company.

"Jess helped me with my insurance claim, he met the adjuster and made sure the insurance company credited for all current Dallas building codes. The crews were respectful and clean, and they replaced my roof, gutters, garage door and fence. I was very impressed."

Customers say: Quality work

"Mr. Ratliff did an awesome job putting in an exterior door at my home. It turned out exactly how I wanted it from the installation down to the outside trim work. I called him up on a Friday about what I wanted and by the next Wednesday he had it done. I definitely will be using him since I have several projects. Plus he was very reasonable in what he charged. I highly recommend Mr. Ratliff."

Garages questions, answered by experts

On average, a garage door can last between 15 and 30 years. However, this lifespan is influenced by several factors, including the quality and material of the door, local climate conditions, and how frequently it is used and maintained.

Key factors affecting longevity include:

  • Material: Wooden doors can last 20 to 30 years or more, while steel doors typically last 15 to 20 years. More robust options, like triple-layer steel, can last 25 to 30 years with proper care. The number of layers in a door also contributes to its durability, with each additional layer potentially adding five years to its life.

  • Maintenance: Regular inspections, cleaning, and immediate repairs can significantly extend the life of your garage door.

  • Usage and Climate: Doors in harsh climates or those used very frequently may wear out faster.

  • Components: Individual parts have different lifespans. For example, automatic openers may fail sooner than the door itself without regular maintenance, and garage door springs typically need replacement every 7 to 12 years.

While the door panels are designed to last as long as the door, they should be replaced sooner if they become visibly damaged, impact the door's smooth operation, or create a security risk.

Just like any other part of your home, hurricane garage doors need regular maintenance to stay in top shape. This ensures they function optimally during storms and provide the protection you need.

You can do some basic maintenance yourself, like cleaning the tracks and lubricating the moving parts. It's as simple as using a mild detergent and water to clean the tracks and applying a silicone-based lubricant to the hardware. However, for more in-depth maintenance and inspections, it's a good idea to call in the professionals to identify any potential problems and fix them before they become more significant issues.

If you open your garage manually, you don’t need sensors. If you have an automatic garage door opener, sensors are required by law. The federal law UL 325 mandates that all residential garage door openers in the U.S. must include sensors. Designed to prevent accidents and reduce the risk of entrapment, the sensors should be able to reverse the motion of the garage door within two seconds of detecting an obstruction. The sensors are there to keep you, your family, and your belongings safe from a door that might otherwise come down too hard or too fast.

The amount of paint needed to cover a two-car garage floor depends on the surface area and the product's coverage rate. On average, a standard two-car garage floor measures 400 to 500 square feet. Coverage ranges from 100 to 200 square feet per gallon for epoxy paint, depending on the product and application method. After some quick math, you may need 2 to 5 gallons of epoxy paint with two coats to cover a two-car garage floor.

Plexiglass garage doors are a durable and less expensive alternative to garage doors, and they maintain a similar aesthetic. Other elegant types of garage doors include carriage house garage doors and stylish wooden garage doors, but these don’t offer the same look as glass, of course.
