"Big Pete’s Welding came out to fix my wrought iron gate. One of the poles rusted and disintegrated near the bottom. He could have suggested to replace the whole pole but said it would be cheaper and just as sturdy if they cut out the bottom 6 inches and welded a new iron piece In it’s place. They came out did what the said, were very professional and cleaned up after. The wrought iron fence is as good as it was. Would definitely hire them again"

"The job was done the day after the quote. Mr. Odin was friendly, professional and did a great job. Price was very reasonable. His weld was very neat. I would use his services again. He had to install a new lock and weld the wrought iron gate."

"They responded quickly to my initial inquiry, reviewed the problem from photos I sent and came back with a quote. I called to discuss it and they explained what went into their quote. As soon as the weather was good, they were here and repaired the gate. I would recommend them to others."

Welding questions, answered by experts

Yes, but you’ll need reliable steel-cutting tools and safety gear to get started. Shipping containers are typically around ¾ inch thick, so it’s entirely possible to cut through them, but experience and the right equipment are very important. When possible, try to get a container as close to the size you want it as possible.

To maintain custom or fabricated metal structures and extend their lifespan and appearance, perform regular cleaning, apply rust prevention treatments, and use protective coatings.

The cost to weld aluminum averages about $14 to $22 per pound. The type of metal factors into the overall cost of any welding project due to the cost of the materials and the expertise required to work with it. Some of the most common metals used by welders include:

  • Magnesium alloy: $7–$16 per pound

  • Low-carbon steel: $11–$12 per pound

  • Stainless steel: $13–$15 per pound

  • Copper/brass: $24–$29 per pound

  • Cast iron: $38–$79 per pound

  • Titanium: $60–$85 per pound

While a high-speed circular saw will cut through metal, and even cut through multiple sheets at once, the fast-spinning saw blades create a lot of heat. This heat can damage paint and other protective coatings, leading to serious problems like rust over time. The cost to paint a metal roof again to avoid this damage is typically an additional $0.50 to $1 per square foot.

Welders use a variety of methods in their trade. Different types of welding are better suited for different purposes and contexts. For example, stick welding is a versatile form suitable for most metals and alloys. The most common types of welding include:

  • Stick welding: $100–$1,000

  • Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding: $250 and up

  • Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding: $250 and up

  • Gas welding: $150 and up

  • Forge welding: $15–$25 per hour
