Stock bathroom cabinets are the most cost-effective option, ranging from $40 to $500 on average. Semi-custom bathroom cabinets range from about $500 to $800 per unit (without installation costs) and offer a wider variety of door and drawer styles than stock cabinets. Custom cabinets range from $700 to $1,000 or more per unit before installation costs. 

Many kitchens have their original cabinets, so kitchen cabinets can last as long as the house does. If there’s an issue with your sink, a flood, or a fire, your cabinets could be damaged. Outside of that, with proper care, your cabinets should last quite a while, especially if they’re built from long-lasting materials like wood or steel.

There’s no strict rule about which way cabinet doors should open, but generally, double cabinet doors should open away from each other. With single doors, you want to avoid having them block your path or swing into  areas where people need to stand. Some kitchens are angled so that cabinet doors may crash into something no matter which way they swing, but the methods above can help prevent damage.

For most purposes, you should go with wood that’s at least 3/4-inch thick for DIY closet shelves. This is the standard thickness for solid wood or MDF shelving and should be able to hold a good amount of weight (around 80 pounds for MDF and 130 pounds for plywood). If you’re storing tools, camera equipment, or other heavier items, you can go up to 1 1/4-inch thickness for maximum strength and durability.

If your cabinet doors won’t close properly, you may have an issue with the hinges. Go through the steps above to adjust them. If that doesn’t work, you may need to replace the hinges.
