"I was impressed with the reviews prior to utilizing the service. I liked that there was a coupon for carpet cleaning services, and after discussion with the husband, decided to go ahead and have the carpets cleaned in two bedrooms. We have a puppy and have fostered several cats last year, and thought since we were getting new bedroom furniture for the master, it would be a good time to have the two rooms animals had been in cleaned BEFORE the furniture arrived. I have always cleaned my carpets myself, and thought I would treat myself and be lazy.... I should have just done the work myself. I got the 2 rooms for $89 package deal, was called within five minutes to schedule the appointment. Scheduled the appointment on a day I was off for an arrival time between 8am-12pm. There was no confirmation or reminder prior to, so the day of when I hadn't heard anything by 10am, I called to make sure I was still on the schedule. I called the number listed for All State Air Duct Pro to have no answer, no answering machine, etc. I called the number back that called to schedule the appointment, got no answer, it went to a voice mail but did not give a company name/number so I was unsure if it was the correct number and did not leave a message. They number with the voice mail did return my call in about five minutes, assured me I was on the schedule and that they should be finished with the current job and on their way to me in about 30 min. I was called at 11:30 to let me know they were on the way. I was called about 30 min later to have them tell me they were at my house (they weren't, they were at the wrong location a block away, but ok), got them to my house and showed them the two rooms I wanted to have steam cleaned. Immediately the upsale pitch started - you need a deep clean, you need your dryer vent done, how about deoderizing the two rooms. I didn't want any additional services, and was flat out asked by the sales person WHY I even had them there if all I wanted was the carpets steam cleaned. I agreed to have them deoderize the two rooms at an additional cost of $29 per room. Work was performed, technician sat and talked to me the entire time his worker did the rooms. I did inspect the two rooms as far as looking at them, technician said the carpet should be dry in a couple of hours, they were paid and left. Again, I have done my own carpets before, and knew it takes some time to dry. 2 1/2 hours later, I walked in to make sure the rooms were dry, and they were a soaking wet mess. Squishy wet. As I had someone coming shortly to assemble the new bedframe, I immediately called the technician back and got a voice mail. I left a message and followed up with a text. I then called the number back that had called to schedule the appointment, left a voice mail there as well. I then grabbed my wet vac, and was able to pull water out of the carpet. 30 minutes later and using a very small wet vac and doing a 3 foot wide section of carpet, I realized I had not heard back from the company, and that I needed to go rent a carpet cleaner just to pull the water out of the carpet so it didn't sit that wet all night long and do damage. I went to Home Depot, got a carpet cleaner, came home - went over my carpet in my master bedroom twice sucking water out of the carpet, and once in the second bedroom we had cleaned. Our master bedroom was mostly dry about an hour later, and the second bedroom was still only slightly damp the next morning. It cost an additional $24 for the rental at Home Depot. As it was Easter weekend, I figured I would hear back from the company on Monday, but over a week later have never heard back from them. All State Air Duct Pro was NOT the company that came to clean the carpets - the company on the paperwork is Houston Texas Cleaning Services. I still have not heard back from them - work was done on the 19th, today is the 29th of April. There was no identifying information for the company on the phone number that called to schedule (no one answered with the company name, no voice mail set up with company information), there was no information on the vehicle that came to the location, the All State Air Duct Pro number information on this website had no one answer, etc. Depending on the way the service went, I had planned to call them back for air duct work, but would not call them back. This is my first time ever leaving a negative review, I have had awesome luck/service from everyone on Angie's List prior. I gave a C overall rating because they did clean the carpets well, but did not complete the job in my opinion as carpet should not be squishy wet after cleaning 2 1/2 hours later. I gave the B rating on price/value because the upselling began immediately. I gave the D rating for quality and Responsiveness because of the water left in the carpet, and lack of response when calling with the problem the same day. I gave the D rating for punctuality because while they may have squeaked in at 11:58 for the window, there was no communication until I initiated it. I definitely would not use this company again. They could have made this right the same day, but chose to not respond to calls or texts."

"”We tried to support a local businessman. Sad to get ripped off for our veteran’s benefits.” With recommendations from several respected friends we chose Justin and Brittany Jennings, doing business as Innovative Construction, LLC. While processing the loan paperwork we developed a project list with Justin and a bid for each. He selected projects he said he was expert at or certified in. We liked Justin because he was local, well known, and very personable. His suggestions made a lot of sense and we urged him to bid on the high side of things since we would not have extra money after paying the loan on our 40+ year old home. He emphasized his love of family. We did not realize that he would sacrifice ours for his welfare. When we closed the loan on September 11 he estimated that he could finish all our projects (roof, bathroom, building, electrical) in six weeks. Since the projects were large and understanding the challenges of construction, we doubled that time limit and all signed a contract to finish by December 31. Problems started soon after that when we realized that he did not communicate well. It was weeks before he appeared to lay out the groundwork for the building and then he was not present when a sub-contractor did the earthwork. He sent his wife on a rainy Sunday to take pictures of the result. His “workforce” was his two brothers-in-law who were obviously over their head with most of the tasks assigned them, although he showed up late, disappeared early and his supervision seemed to consist mostly of calling them various profane names. Out of over 100+ possible work days (good weather days that weren’t Sundays or holidays) Justin only put in appearances for 31. Usually he was here minutes or a couple of hours, never before 9:30 a.m. and generally absent after 3:00 p.m. The brothers never knew the plan for the next day, what task they might work on, or when they would return as they left. Our yard was covered in construction trash and debris and the grass ruined as they ran water hoses for hours cleaning their tools or a tile saw. We tried to work with Justin to develop a calendar and ensure he was obtaining the right materials. We asked time and again for receipts and accountability of the large advances we’d made so he could obtain materials. He would abruptly leave the worksite so it became difficult to speak with him about these issues. He was often surly and curt when he was present, alluding to problems with affluent people, our tax status, and refusing to share details about the construction. We tried text messages, phone calls, visits to his business office (also his house) and finally resorted to letters to try to communicate with him. Generally he only answered questions about when he would be back to work (not the week of) but avoided any answer about accountability even though the contract he signed said he’d need to provide receipts. The work done in bathroom was obviously substandard but Justin avoided talking to us about it. We finally pinned him down in a meeting in December, days before the deadline where he admitted as such but still could not provide a plan to correct the work. He was facile with excuses – ‘the excavators are all rented this week’ ‘that’s the vanity we were sold’ ‘that guy should know better’ ‘it will look better when it’s done’ – but was difficult to pin to any specific course or action. He removed our roof (shingles and some sheathing) in the middle of December. Weeks later with Justin avoiding us, I went to Whitt Building Supply who were supposed to supply the roof. They would not share information about the roof with me although they understood I was the customer. I deduced that Justin had not actually ordered the roof. The components were finally delivered on January 16, dumped unceremoniously in the yard with Justin fleeing immediately after. He installed some parts in January but blamed Whitt for not sending enough material. Months later and it is still not complete. As it turns out, it is not installed properly where it is, missing closures and who-knows-what-else. Because of this the house and ceilings were damaged during the hail storm on January 9. Justin refused to provide insurance information, saying he would address the ceilings, still not done. I will let the pictures speak about the quality of work done but a short listing of issues includes wrong concrete pad size for the metal building, now eroding away underneath it. There is no easy access to the building, without a driveway or step to enter the knee-high door. We’re not sure if it’s Perks Metalwork issue or Justin’s assembly but the building is now leaking on two sides. Components of the building and electricity, paid for, were never installed. In a seeming malicious act Justin had his brother-in-law tear out the poorly installed shower and dump it in our front yard, where the debris remains to this day. Trash, construction materials, used ear plugs, and fast food wrappers are left strewn over the yard, mixed in with the paint, chemicals, and blobs of concrete they’ve left everywhere. I pick them up as I can but it will require a significant effort and some cost to haul them away and dump it, as Justin was already paid to do. To summarize, Innovative Construction has taken $40,000 from us, not delivered a single project they contracted for, damaged our house, and repeatedly lied to us. They’ve broken the contract to provide receipts leaving us in the lurch with the Veterans Land Board. We are not the only ones this has happened to. At least one other person was the victim of Justin and Brittany’s schemes – see their review on Google. It appears they’v broken the law to establish a trustee account for the construction funds and not use our money for other purposes or projects. The Coryell Sheriff’s Office and City Attorney are sorting through that now. In the meantime, caveat emptor – the only thing innovative about Innovative Construction, LLC, is their ability to separate one from your money and sanity."

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

If your chimney doesn't have a damper, you are reducing your home's energy efficiency while allowing drafts, debris, and even animals to enter your home. Remember, installing a damper helps regulate airflow, keeping warm air inside during winter and preventing cooled air from escaping in the summer. It also acts as a barrier to keep out moisture and critters.

The easiest fireplace to build is an electric fireplace. These aren’t true fireplaces but can mimic the look of a traditional fireplace. True fireplaces, made of brick and stone, are complex and require professional installation; adding them to an existing home is demanding and expensive. You could spend $30,000 to have a real fireplace installed.

If you haven’t had your chimney cleaned in some time, soot and grime can build up, making it difficult for the lever to release to close the flue. When this happens, locate the lever and clean it thoroughly. If this doesn’t help, consult with a fireplace repair pro to examine it for you.

Chimney cleaning is an important task you must perform at least once a year to remove dangerous soot and creosote buildup, which can cause fires and increase the amount of dangerous carbon monoxide entering the home. If you use your chimney frequently, you may need to clean it more often. Call a chimney sweep if you notice smoke entering your home when you use your fireplace, difficulty keeping your fire going, a campfire smell, or if the fire damper is black.

There are a handful of things you can look out for that indicate fireplace repair is necessary in your home:

  • See or smell smoke in your home during use.

  • You smell gas or unusual odors coming from your fireplace.

  • The fireplace is visibly damaged or crumbling.

  • The igniter won’t light.

  • You notice shaling (pieces of chimney lining) building up in your fireplace.

  • Any portion of the fireplace is rusted.

  • You notice efflorescence (white stains) on the brick.

If any of these signs emerge or you suspect that you have an issue, call in a fireplace repair professional immediately.
