"Memorial Day storm broke a tree that crushed my 20x30 carport. I called Jerry and explained what had happened and he worked me in for a visit/estimate the next day. He gave me a service date and his crew showed up on time. Blake and his crew were great. Very professional, really nice and answered all my questions. Worked non-stop. Wish I could give 10+++++ stars. An excellent company, owner and employees."

"I put a 12' x 33' concrete slab at the back of my house in preparation for a sunroom and then got visits and bids from several installers in the Austin area. In a previous house some years ago I had had a moderately unpleasant experience with a nationally known sunroom installer because of leaks and maintenance and, this time, made careful plans in advance. I considered a wood framed structure but the cost would have been 1.5 - 2.5 time more. I chose Lone Star Patio. They installed a beautiful aluminum sunroom over the slab (11 windows + a cabana door) with electrical outlets/fan/light. Peter Garcia, the owner, had a personal hand in almost everything that got done. He is easy to communicate with and responds promptly to texts, emails and phone calls. The person who manually did the installation, Sean, is a perfectionist (and also a really nice fellow). The electricians - subcontractors - were so good that I will call them myself if I need electrical work. Peter knows how to choose good workers. There were some significant delays but these were due to weather and matters beyond Lone Star Patio's control. There is a 5 year labor warranty from Lone Star Patio + longer materials warranties from Norandex (for the windows) and PGT (for the door). Overall, we are very happy with results and I trust the company to provide maintenance, if it's needed during the warranty periods."

"We hired Metroplex Awning for replacing our 20-yr old awning. Curtis gave us 3 options including reusing old frame (to save money), new awning and larger structure that would wrap around the corner of the house. He was very up front about pros and cons of each and how he would go about approaching each solution also giving us plenty of information about material choices for both frame and canvas. At the end we decided on the larger structure and I am glad we did. It came out very nice giving us more choices for outdoor living space. Curtis was receptive to couple of special requests we have made for the awning and was able to incorporate them at very reasonable cost. We had slight delay in scheduling installation day due to amount of work Curtis and Joe had at the time which tells me they stay very busy. During installation it was discovered that one of the supporting arms was in incorrect spot. Joe quickly identified the problem and came back next day with adjusted frame. He and the crew were very careful around the house and windows + very detail oriented when it comes to every part they installed. Overall they did fantastic job addressing all the concerns / questions we had in very professional manner. I think their pricing was in the middle of the road comparing to couple other bids we got. Main selling points for us (apart from the fair price) were customer focus and straight talk from both Curtis and Joe. Thank you!"

Patio Covers questions, answered by experts

It’s not a good idea to allow heavy rain to fall on your awning, as puddling can occur and overload the awning. Your awning should be able to handle a light rain, though you should allow it to dry out before retracting it or open it to dry as soon as the rain stops. As always, consult manufacturer guidelines for using and caring for your awning.

Besides the type of awning, you’ll need to choose the type of cover. Your awning installation professional will review your options with you, including availability and costs. The types of covers you can choose from include:

  • Wood, which is durable but can be damaged easily by rainwater and fire

  • Cotton offers flexibility, weatherproofing, and easy cleaning

  • Canvas is highly durable and is a good choice for retractable awnings

  • Metal is sturdy but is prone to rust

  • Polyester is easy to clean and is a more breathable option

  • Polycarbonate is highly resistant to UV rays and is difficult to damage

It’s best to keep your awning retracted if winds are 25 miles per hour or more to make sure your awning doesn’t sustain irreparable damage due to wind. Some awnings can take winds up to 30 miles per hour without any damage, but it’s best to consult the manufacturer’s guidance. A good rule of thumb is if it’s too windy for you to comfortably stand outside, it’s time to bring the awning in.

The least expensive way to enclose a porch is with screens. These protect the room by preventing insects from entering and, if you live in a warm climate, provide excellent airflow during hot summer months. Screens cost far less than any other alternative, so if you are against getting permits, spending too much, or enclosing your porch in walls or glass, screens are the best choice.

Costs depend on fabric type, window size, and additional features like motorization or custom designs.
