"Michael, the technician, is respectful and polite ? but the company is not. I submitted a request through Angi?s website, making it very clear from the beginning that I needed sprinkler system leak detection. I repeated this multiple times to the representative who called me, and I even wrote it in the service request. When Michael arrived, he walked around my house for about 9 minutes, then told me he couldn?t identify the leak because there was no visible water on the surface. This was exactly what I had already done myself two weeks earlier ? and the whole reason I called in professionals was for leak detection, not just a surface inspection. Afterward, his manager called and demanded a $125 service fee. When I explained that no leak detection was actually performed, he became extremely rude and even threatened to sue me if I didn?t pay. This behavior is unacceptable. STAY AWAY from this company."

Lawn Irrigation questions, answered by experts

Several signs indicate that your lawn may require aeration. If you notice water pooling or runoff after rainfall, it suggests poor water infiltration, and aeration could help. Compacted soil may cause grass to thin out, turn yellow, or struggle to grow. Additionally, the presence of a thatch layer, which is a buildup of dead grass and debris, can indicate aeration is needed to alleviate thatch and promote healthier grass growth. Monitoring these signs can help you determine when your lawn would benefit from aeration.

Lawn care is tough work—even when you hire pros, there’s no guarantee your grass won’t die (unless, of course, your company offers a guarantee). But lawn care companies don’t control the rain or watering restrictions. Your type of grass also impacts the type of care required to keep a lush lawn—and how much that care costs. Talk to a lawn care pro to determine the best times to treat your lawn based on type of grass and your climate.

Aerating a newly sodded lawn is generally not recommended immediately after installation. It's crucial to allow the sod to establish itself first, typically over the first growing season. Aerating too soon can disrupt the fragile root systems of the newly laid sod and potentially damage the turf. It's best to aerate prior to laying new sod or wait until the sod has fully rooted and the lawn is stable before considering aeration, usually after the first year.

The frequency of lawn aeration depends on various factors such as soil type, grass variety, and lawn usage. In most cases, aerating once a year, typically in the fall or early spring, is sufficient to maintain a healthy lawn. However, lawns subject to heavy foot traffic or especially compacted soil may benefit from more frequent aeration, possibly every six months. It's essential to assess your lawn's specific needs and consult with a lawn care professional if you're unsure about the ideal aeration schedule for your property.

If your lawn hasn't been aerated in over a year, or the soil is incredibly compacted, do two passes with the aerator. The first pass should follow your mowing pattern and the second one should form a perpendicular angle relative to the first. Stick to 20 to 40 holes per square foot as a rule of thumb.
