"I bought 2 key fobs intending to program them myself, only to find I couldn't. Then I find most locksmiths are mobile and charge a mobile fee just to come to me: another unexpected expense. Roland of Alamo Keys was wonderful - he offered to meet me (which negated the mobile fee of coming to me) and he gave me a Military DC. Thank you, Roland! In addition, he was professional, pleasant and efficient. He helped to reduce an unexpected expensive and stressful event into a near pleasurable experience. I'm definitely calling Roland again if I am in need."

"This was a high game fence repair. I highly recommend Terry and his crew. Work was well executed and timely. Terry himself is a caring man who was friendly and professional , and willing to work with the insurance company to get the job done. I will definitely hire them for future needs."

"Craftsman Dave Elliott did a great job with my quarter rounds / shoe molds for my hardwood floor replacement. I was replacing carpet after I bought the house, but the flooring people don't do shoe molds. He is very skilled and helped me with a bunch of other handyman tasks as well. It was easy to work with Suzanne to schedule the work."

"Walter and Glen at Protect Your Home Group with ADT are the best people to talk to in terms of security alarm. Being a locksmith myself I know how important it is to deal with the right people. I referred a lot of customers to them and so far they are happy with their service. I myself got one for my house. Thank you for a consistent service and great deal."

Locksmiths questions, answered by experts

Door locks should be changed roughly every seven years. The average lifespan of a door lock is seven to 10 years, so it’s best to err on the side of caution and change them early, especially if they are showing signs of wear and tear. Examples of deterioration include visible rust and difficulty opening or closing the door. Some locks can work safely beyond 10 years, but it depends on how often they are used and whether they are exposed to damaging environmental conditions like precipitation or extreme temperatures.

If your key breaks in a lock, first remain calm and avoid forcing the broken piece further in. You may be able to remove it yourself if a portion of the key is still protruding from the lock. To aid removal, lubricate the keyhole with a graphite-based spray. Then, try using tools like pliers, tweezers, a bobby pin, or even a jigsaw blade to gently grasp and pull the broken piece out. If these methods don't work, you can't reach the key, or you're concerned about damaging the lock, it's best to call a professional locksmith for assistance.

When it comes to how to get a stuck key out of a lock, the simplest way is to use some kind of lubricating substance. One option is to apply graphite powder while wiggling the key gently. As the graphite fills the lock, jiggling should loosen the key enough to allow you to pull it out.

Whether or not keyless door locks are safe and trustworthy depends on the visibility of the programming code—and a trespasser’s determination. Even if you carefully guard entry and programming codes, those trying to break in may be able to crack open the lock’s faceplate with a screwdriver and change the codes. The same goes for manual models.

Some find smart locks the safest option because it’s harder to manipulate codes without access to your phone. But it’s possible to get hacked even then. Consider installing an extended security system, like door and window alarms or surveillance cameras, to enhance security.

You might want to change a door lock entry code for a handful of reasons. The most common answers are extra security or a forgotten code. You may also find yourself in a position where you need to temporarily change the code to allow a guest to come and go freely but want to switch it back once things return to normal.
