"Strongly recommend getting an energy audit completed on your home, especially when it's complimentary, thank you, Paul! There were quite a few items that needed attention in our home. The technicians Justin and Fernando were solid. They arrived on time, did a great job, were polite, and were very clean. They took before and after pictures, which shows how much I needed the work done. We went with the insulation to ensure it was at least 18 inches, the duct sealing of the junction boxes and HVAC unit, and we had to reroute the bathroom vent. We even did the optional UV-C light, which makes us feel much safer and takes a load off, especially in this current environment of being conscious of germs and all. Great technicians, great company, and solid work. Highly recommend Justin and Fernando :) The email and text reminder game is on point."

"I was thrilled with the work Enlighten Energy Solutions performed on my solar panel system. Ethan worked with me and listened attentively while I explained my issues with the system. He was able to diagnose the problem with the system, complete repairs, and verify the whole system was operating properly. He was extremely courteous and professional and I will absolutely call on them again."

"Called Rhino, talked with the owner and he came out promptly for an estimate.  They were the second company I called and ended up setting up an appt the day they came by with the estimate.  The method he suggested using was much less invasive for getting the insulation under the room over the garage than what the other company wanted to do, and he could do it a lower price.  I got the feeling that Rhino was actually figuring out their cost as opposed to the first company who gave me nice big round numbers without ever doing any measurements or seeing in the attic.  The first company also was pushing a lot of extra, and very pricey, services on me.  Dirk simply asked what I needed, he made some suggestions but never was pushy about it.  Explained what we could do for getting the most bang for our buck now, and if we wanted to do more later we always could.  He and his crew showed up right on time and got to work.  Within a few hours they had finished the job and I could feel a drastic difference in the room over the garage instantly.  I had already done everything I could, but his expertise and hard work finally solved our problem.  In the process they ran into an issue where they ended up actually needing more insulation than expected, but rather than just surprise me with an inflated bill he offered without me even asking to just split the cost with him.  I was floored, to have a company that doesn't just do an install above the estimated cost and then expect to be paid.  The additional cost wasn't even very much, $100 which he split with me when he didn't have to.
Rhino solved my problem on the first try and in a short amount of time.  If there ever comes a time when I need more insulation work or energy efficiencies added to our house, I won't even waste my time calling anyone else."

"I live in a old house, and the insulation on the attic needs to be added.  City of Austin Utilities (Austin Energy) has a great rebate program for insulation, so I signed up.  EnergyAttic is one of the companies listed by Austin Energy.  For getting the quote, the audit person was friendly and through with his explanation about what's and why's.  Finally I scheduled for the work.  Kent came with his crews and basically supervised and worked on the problem and the insulation.  He made sure everything was installed (seal, insulation) properly and Austin Energy auditor approved the work.  The door blower/blast test took a while because of setting issue (EnergyAttic subcontracted to other company), and finally after 3 hours, we did get an excellent result.  I was happy with Kent's and his crews work.  They were friendly, punctual, and got the work done.  They actually came back to reseal door on the furnace area.  They also promised to come back if  I were to work on the attic and the insulation needed to be re-sweep."

"This was work for our HOA.  Chris was willing to come by and review the job beforehand, and after review we agreed on work required and expected completion date.  After confirming permits and utility requirements, the job was completed on time and beyond expectations.  Excellent work at reasonable rates without any sales pressure.  Will be scheduling Chris to replace the other power meter pole very soon.

"I was considering 3 companies to do the work. They provided the best deal. The installation went very smoothly; finished in a day. Very happy with the process to that point. Had some problems with some logistics afterward. The papers weren't processed properly to iniitally run the solar panels (it took 2 months till we figured out the electric company hadn't 'turned on' the panels). There was also some problems with the paperwork for the tax rebates that slowed things down. I talked to the owner Mark, who was very sorry for the problems and offered a small refund, even though we don't really know what happened. He wanted to be sure I was a happy customer, which I am. I was impressed by his professionalism. However, I'm still not seeing the savings that I was told. I've had my house energy audited, installed Nest thermostats, and still not seeing a major decrease in my KWh usage. I can only assume that we are having a hotter season than last year; hoping to realize savings next year.

Energy Efficiency Auditing questions, answered by experts

R-value measures an insulation material's thermal resistance, indicating its ability to resist heat transfer. A higher R-value signifies better insulation performance because the material is more effective at slowing heat flow. The R-value depends on the type, thickness, and density of the insulation material, such as fiberglass, foam, or cellulose. Each inch of insulation typically provides an R-value between 3 and 8. There is no single universal R-value; the optimal choice depends on your climate zone. Colder climates require a much higher R-value than warmer ones to maintain energy efficiency, keep the home warm in winter and cool in summer, and manage costs.

You can save money on heating oil through a combination of improving home efficiency and smart purchasing strategies.

Home Efficiency and Usage:

  • Improve Insulation: Ensure your home, especially the basement and attic, is well-insulated and sealed against drafts to prevent heat leakage.

  • Manage Your Thermostat: Use a properly calibrated and programmable thermostat. Lower the temperature by a few degrees, particularly when you are away from home or asleep.

Purchasing Strategies:

  • Buy in the Off-Season: Order heating oil during the summer months when prices are generally at their lowest. This strategy is most effective if you have a large primary tank or a separate storage tank to accommodate bulk deliveries.

  • Consider a Delivery Contract: Some companies offer contracts with a set price for the term. This can lead to savings if market prices for oil increase, but you might pay more if prices drop.

To determine the right size generator for your house, you should calculate the total wattage of the appliances and devices you want to power during an outage. List all essential items, note their start-up wattages, and add them together.

Here are some typical wattage requirements for common appliances:

  • Refrigerator: 600 watts

  • Large dehumidifier: 700 watts

  • Large window air conditioner: 1,400 watts

  • Water heater: 3,000 to 4,500 watts

  • Electric furnace: 5,000 to 25,000 watts

A 7,500-watt generator might be sufficient for essentials like a refrigerator, freezer, well pump, and lighting circuits. However, for high-demand items like a water heater or furnace, a whole-home generator is a better choice. A portable generator may be enough if you only need to power a few critical items.

While home square footage can offer a rough estimate, it is not always a reliable indicator. For reference, here are some typical generator sizes based on square footage:

  • 1,000 sq ft: 6–9 kW

  • 1,500 sq ft: 7–10 kW

  • 2,000 sq ft: 10–14 kW

  • 2,500 sq ft: 12–16 kW

  • 3,000 sq ft: 16–20 kW+

For the most accurate sizing, consult a professional who can calculate your home's peak and average power consumption and recommend the optimal generator.

Dryers are designed to use as little electricity as possible, but power is still required to run the motor that turns the drum and to heat an element that pumps hot air. Eco devices are available and may lead to cost savings in the long term, but you should run the figures before committing to an eco-friendly device as they are often much more expensive to purchase.

There are a few ways to reduce your electricity bills if you use window AC units to keep cool. Set the unit temperature at least 1 degree higher than it is currently to reduce costs. Keep the unit clean for it to run efficiently. You may want to hire a window AC specialist near you to inspect the unit once a year and keep it in tip-top shape.
