"These technicians are capable, friendly, punctual people. They did an inspection, completed a project that included digging and running lines, updated electrical panel, installed GFI plugs and replaced plugs and switches that were not working. Everyone explained everything and the cost was only what had been given us before doing the work. Travis Electrical will be my only call when any issue arises!"

"We needed a professional to give us a quote and work we could trust. We asked Randall and knew we needn’t look any further. He took care of our needs and did so at a very reasonable price, that’s not to mention his professionalism."

"The contractor installed exterior light fixtures and evaluated an intermittent power interruption to the house. He acted as a go between with NES and followed up to ensure the problem had been corrected."

"It would be very difficult, if not impossible to find another company that has the commitment to excellence that M&M Electric has. I had them put in new central heating and air in my house and was surprised at how quickly they installed everything while still maintaining a high quality standard and while paying attention to every detail. Very impressive considering what they charged for the install was way less than what I was expecting to pay. I will definitely keep their number handy for any other jobs that pop up."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

Generally, you’ll want to keep between 60 and 70 feet between the generator and the transfer switch. There are a few reasons for this, including:

  • The distance reduces the noise coming from the generator into your home.

  • It increases efficiency because you won’t have a voltage drop from this short of a distance.

  • Prevents carbon monoxide poisoning: keep at least 15 feet between your generator and an open window.

DIY is possible for basic setups. Professional installation ensures safe and proper electrical connections.

Costs range from $500 to $2,500, depending on generator type and installation complexity.

While diesel is relatively stable, it won’t last nearly as long as propane and you may have to replace it if it sits unused for too long. Diesel can sometimes struggle to work efficiently or start engines during especially cold weather, so it’s not the best choice for every climate. Compared to fuels like propane and natural gas, diesel generators tend to be noisier and create more exhaust, which isn’t always ideal for home use.

You may need a permit for a portable generator if you’ll be installing a transfer switch for your primary residence or similar work. Otherwise, a permit for other uses may not be necessary. Check your local building codes or ask a local generator installer for more information about your local regulations.
