"After interviewing several companies, I chose GC Construction to replace and extend an existing driveway. They delivered perfectly and as discussed. Geovanni, the owner, made very helpful suggestions prior to the project. Their price was excellent. Communication was excellent. Their crew worked hard and meticulously. The end product turned out beautiful. I highly recommend GC construction."

"I'm very happy with the landscaping completed today. They were quick to respond to initial request for services and stayed in contact throughout. Thank you Miss Angela and your guys, Ronnie and Kenneth. I hope you all follow up in a wk or two to insure I haven't messed up, all y'alls hard work. I will definitely recommend and use your company again. ** I was a little nervous of hiring landscapers, as the previous chuckleheads were a huge disappointment. Y'all are very professional and thorough. I thank you again."

"Excellent! On the day planned I left a check taped to our door and, unfortunately, the hydraulic pump went out on the grinder while at our house. Keith called me to let me know and left the check but promised he would be back. The next morning, he had the pump repaired and came straight o our house and did an excellent job. Very trustworthy and reliable!"

"I hired this contractor to install a pad for a new garage and a driveway. I selected them because their bid ($28,770) was $500 less than other bidders. They seemed friendly and professional. The work was started on schedule and appeared to be progressing well until the concrete block was installed. Despite giving them a drawing that showing the exact position of the driveway and pad the block for the garage pad was rotated by 90 degrees. They did correct the problem problem by extending the block base so it was 21 x 21. I ordered an 18 x 20 garage and as a result I had to change the garage to 20 x 20. They did do a good job on pouring and finishing the cement except where it meets the street (see picture). But they left a big mess which required multiple calls before someone came by and partially cleaned up the mess. They said the block mason would come by to finish the cleanup but he never came. Also, they raised the cost by $1000."

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

Asphalt and tarmac are not the same thing. Traditional tarmac, short for tarmacadam, uses tar as a binder to hold crushed stone together. Asphalt uses bitumen—a byproduct of crude oil—to bind aggregate. Though tarmac was once a go-to for roads, asphalt has become the modern standard. And these days, most surfaces referred to as “tarmac” are actually asphalt. So, while the names may overlap, the key distinction lies in the binder—tar for tarmac and bitumen for asphalt.

Recycled asphalt is not better than gravel, but can be a good alternative. It is inexpensive, but not as low-cost as gravel, and doesn’t tend to last as long. Recycled asphalt isn’t as dusty as gravel and is more environmentally friendly. The black look can be something that homeowners prefer. No matter what, ensure you choose an experienced recycled asphalt contractor.

Common alternatives to a gravel driveway include concrete, asphalt, brick, stone pavers, and permeable pavers. Concrete and asphalt are generally the most affordable options. However, concrete can be prone to cracking in cold climates, while asphalt may soften in areas with high heat and direct sun exposure. For enhanced curb appeal, brick, stone, and permeable pavers are popular choices, though their installation can be more expensive due to intricate designs. Stone pavers offer a natural look and are sometimes installed with gravel around them. Both permeable pavers and brick driveways provide excellent drainage, which helps prevent flooding and reduce water runoff.

Driveways should be sloped with a minimum 2% slope—anything lower will cause precipitation and runoff to collect. A 2% slope is the equivalent of a 2-foot rise over 100 feet. One quick way to check the integrity of your driveway’s slope: no more than four inches of water should collect on the surface longer than 15 minutes after rain.

Wet cutting is usually the preferred method. It controls dust, which helps protect your lungs and makes for a cleaner working environment. Plus, the water cools the blade, preventing overheating and prolonging its life while providing smoother, more precise cuts. The downside is the mess—water and asphalt sludge can be messy to clean. Dry cutting, though convenient if water isn’t available, creates a lot of dust, which can be harmful. This also increases the risk of blade damage due to overheating. So, if you have the option, wet cutting is the better method for most asphalt jobs.
