"Great! Mark arrived when he said he would. He explained all of his plans to me of what he planned to do to make the repair. He also economically, as we were able to use paint that I had left over from when the walls were originally painted."

"Milo was great to work with! He immediately said, "I want to see your project." He came to our house & looked at our space, our needs & listened to what I wanted. He asked questions & listened to my concerns. He worked with my schedule & got things done right away, even though he had to order something. He has an associate & he was also excellent. Their work was top notch, they worked carefully & quickly. This project included wall prep & painting & replacing a broken window pane. When they left, it was beautiful & perfectly clean. I plan to hire Milo for our next indoor project. I highly recommend Milo US Falcon. Thank you Angi for listing them!"

"Alfredo Vargas gave me a date and arrived that day, and he and his crew repaired rock walls around our large pool area and a retaining wall. They did great work, were courteous, and cleaned up extremely well. I highly recommend them."

"Nick and his team really went the extra mile to rebuild our deck in a short amount of time. We live overseas most of the year and didn't realize our deck was in such bad shape until we came home for the summer. We had less than 3 weeks to get the work scheduled and completed before we had to go back overseas. Even though Smoky Mountain Decks was already scheduled out until December, they made room for us and managed to finish our deck within days of our departure. The new deck is well built and looks fabulous now. I was impressed by the professionalism of the crew and their building expertise. They measured everything to exact precision and had clever solutions for working around defects in our original house construction that affected the deck (like exterior walls that were off by up to 3/4 of an inch in places). Once the guys were on the job, they really flew and were able to finish it much faster than we expected. We really appreciate the hard work these guys put into making us happy. They also recommended a painter that we were really happy with (Once Upon a Painter). Thank you, Smoky Mountain Decks!"

Small jobs welcome

"I found Mr. Handyman to be a very professional service. They answered the phone when I originally called in a prompt, efficient, and courteous manner. Their method of charging (i.e. time and materials) was clearly explained and an "estimate" of what the final cost would be was provided. The appointment for the repair work was made at the time of the call, and a follow-up email was received confirming the appointment. The serviceman arrived as scheduled and did a great job on repairing my water-damaged ceiling."

Wall Repair questions, answered by experts

Regular inspection for issues like cracks or leaning and ensuring drainage stays clear.

Generally speaking, a retaining wall should be between 3 and 4 feet high, depending on variables such as the wall-building material, the purpose of the retaining wall, and more. If you want your retaining wall to be taller than 4 feet, check with your local building ordinance office for the maximum allotment. You may also need a special permit for retaining walls over 4 feet tall.

Small retaining walls still require a foundation of some kind, typically a concrete footing. This helps to ensure the wall is structurally sound and prevents the ground from shifting over time, especially during those winter freeze/thaw cycles. The footing helps spread the weight of the wall and the load it carries over a larger area of the ground, thus assisting with stability. This is true of small retaining walls, larger rock garden walls, and the like.

Railroad ties can be good for retaining walls, but it depends on the area. They have a desirable rustic look and are durable. The problem is they’re treated with creosote, a preservative the EPA says poses a risk to humans and wildlife. Over time, the preservative seeps out of the wood and into the ground. Many areas have banned the use of creosote-treated wood on residential properties. If your area does allow it, never use railroad ties near an edible garden or drinking water source. Instead, use wood that’s treated with an EPA-approved preservative or a wood-alternative composite material.

Poured concrete is often the cheapest material for a retaining wall, costing around $6 to $8 per square foot. Other budget-friendly options include vinyl and landscaping timbers, which range from $10 to $15 per square foot; landscaping timbers are particularly well-suited for DIY projects. Untreated timber and railroad ties are a step up in price, starting at $15 to $25 per square foot. Natural stones can also be a cost-effective choice if you can source them from your own property, but they can be expensive to purchase. High-end materials like steel are typically the most expensive but offer superior durability and aesthetics.
