"I have worked with Homes Construction & Fence Co. twice now, once for a wooden privacy fence, and most recently for a black chain-link fence. In both cases, the crew fast fast, did a great job, and were in and out in less than two days. I would highly recommend this service to anyone seeking a fencing pro."

""We hired Fava Fencing to repair our damaged fence after a storm, and they did an outstanding job. Michael was prompt in assessing the damage and provided a fair quote. The team arrived on time, worked diligently, and even reinforced other sections of the fence to prevent future issues. The repaired fence looks brand new. We highly recommend Fava Fencing for their reliability and quality workmanship." He was very patient and kind."

"It all came together in the end. We had a couple delays due to staffing, but Patrick did work with me on installing the fence in the concrete that was being poured. We had some problems because it was around a pool and he didn't seem that knowledgeable about pool requirements in Hamilton County, so I provided the latch and hinges. I had to move the latch up myself to get through inspection. The reason for the B is because he wanted full payment up front and I thought that was weird and left me at his mercy to finish. But he did and it's all good now. I would hire again."

"John Prater and team (Joe & Joseph) just completed pressure washing our roof, two-story house with walk-out basement, decks and porches, and two-car carport. We are very pleased with the work and would recommend Prater’s without hesitation; the house looks fantastic and our roof looks new! Additionally the communication from John was great- very unusual in our rural community. John called me in a timely fashion to come out and give an estimate and he arrived on time. After scheduling the work he and the crew showed up exactly when promised. So refreshing! We plan on using Prater’s for all future work and have already recommended to neighbors. Don’t bother researching, reading more reviews, etc. Call John Prater- you won’t regret it."

Fencing questions, answered by experts

The best way to protect your pets from coyotes is to ensure they are always supervised when outside, especially during dawn and dusk when coyotes are the most active. When walking your dog, keep it on a short leash and carry something noisy you can use to haze any coyotes you may encounter.

Yes, like other types of wood fencing, pressure-treated fence boards can warp. However, there are a few things you can do to reduce the likelihood of your fence warping. Sealing or staining your fence every few years, for example, can protect the wood against moisture, sun exposure, and temperature changes.

Galvanized metal, vinyl, and composite fences are known to be the longest-lasting options, often surviving for over 30 years with proper care. Metal fences, including galvanized chain link and aluminum, can look great for decades because the galvanization process adds a protective coating that resists weather and pests. Similarly, vinyl and composite materials are resistant to pests and can withstand harsh weather for many years. In comparison, a typical wood fence lasts about 15 years, and a standard vinyl fence has a lifespan of 20 to 30 years.

The ideal distance between fence posts depends on several factors, including the terrain, the purpose of the fence, and the material used. For different types of fences, here are some general guidelines:

  • Wood and Metal Fences: Posts should be spaced between 5 and 8 feet apart.

  • Vinyl Fences: Spacing can be between 6 and 8 feet.

  • Chain-Link, Mesh, or Lattice Fences: Posts can be set anywhere from 4 to 25 feet apart, with 4-10 feet being common for chain-link.

  • Wire Fences: Spacing can be up to 12 feet apart.

Since wood is weaker when installed horizontally versus vertically, a horizontal fence is prone to sagging. You can prevent this drooping from happening by building a sturdier fence. Use softwoods that are more stable, such as cedar and redwood, or denser hardwoods for your fence materials. If you can’t afford these pricey materials, use thicker two-by-six pressure-treated pine boards or shorten the span the fence boards have to cover by installing more posts.
