They diagnosed the problem...including an explanation that actually made sense (e.g. the house had settled a bit over the years and smashed the old drain line so that it was no longer round and it let in dirt and roots). The attempt to mechanically clear the drainage problem did not go well, perhaps because of a "p-trap" configuration, but several other plumbers have been able to clear the line previously. All the work he did was top notch and we couldn't be happier with the end result!"
