It is almost always more affordable to repair a radiator than it is to replace one. The average radiator repair cost is around $150, and it’s typically about ten times as expensive—around $1,500—to replace a radiator. If you have multiple radiators, start by bleeding a first-floor radiator that is farthest from the boiler. Work your way toward the boiler on the first floor before moving to the next floor, where you’ll again start by bleeding the radiator farthest from the boiler. Continue this pattern for radiators on each floor until they’ve all been bled.

Generally speaking, yes, turning one radiator off does save some money, especially if the system is a little older—so long as you’re not cranking up the dial on the ones you leave on. But some HVAC specialists argue that keeping your entire system on ensures that your boiler stays efficient. After all, it’s rated to fit your home and heats the amount of water your heating system needs. This could be the case if you have a new system. However, turning radiators off in unused rooms lowers the amount of hot water you need.

To figure out if your boiler is worth repairing or if you need to replace your boiler, first figure out how old the unit is. Boilers last 15 to 20 years, so if your unit is 15 years old or older, it may be better to replace the entire thing depending on the severity of the problems. If it’s not quite that old, then it’s probably worth repairing. Another thing to consider is whether your warranty covers any of the repair costs. If so, it may be worthwhile to repair your boiler to keep it running.
