"I would recommend thinking twice before using Volunteer Hearth & Home to install a fireplace. We have been arguing and fighting with them for several years to correct a faulty install that allowed water to leak into our home and soak our sub floor. Many times, it took several calls to get them to look at the issues and each time they came the problem did not get resolved, but in reality, continued to get worse. They finally after years of going back and forth with them, stated it was a roof leak and not their issue. We contacted a roofing company who inspected the roof and determined the roof flashing was the issue. This was a replacement by Volunteer Health for the original that was not the correct pitch for the roof and was not properly installed. The roofing company fixed the flashing.... problem solved. In the meanwhile, Volunteer Hearth refuses to take responsibility leaving us with significant water damage to a newly built home. It's obvious we will need to take legal action to get the repairs needed to our home."

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

While hardwoods are the best woods to burn, a few types of woods should be avoided when burning. Wood that has not had time to season, or “green wood,” should be avoided. The extra water in the wood makes it smoke horribly, which is not a quality you want. Additionally, it’s best to avoid any wood that is manufactured or has been treated, including coated or sealed wood, painted wood, or pressure-treated wood. These woods have chemicals that will be released into your air when burned and can cause health problems.

Cleaning your own chimney can be risky, especially if it hasn't been done in a long time and you lack the proper tools, knowledge, and safety equipment. The process involves getting onto the roof and handling soot, which poses safety issues. Remember, inhaling chimney soot is a significant health risk. Wearing the proper respiratory equipment is required.

Gas fireplace inserts are considered the most efficient because they convert more of the fuel source—gas—into heat. They offer excellent heat output per the amount of fuel they use. While electric fireplace inserts are praised for their efficiency, keep in mind that they don’t offer as strong a heat output but may still be a great choice if you want an efficient option.

Removing a chimney is difficult. You may need to take it out brick by brick from inside the walls. If it’s part of the load bearing structure of the home, removing it becomes even more difficult. Chimney removal cost can range from $1,000 to $10,000, depending on the complexity of the job, and whether or not it’s load bearing. For this reason, many people will choose to remove the fireplace and seal the chimney at the bottom and top. You could remove the visible exterior section of the chimney at the roofline before sealing it, too.

There are six main choices of fireplace inserts: wood-burning, gas, propane, pellet, electric, and coal. Coal fireplace inserts aren’t as popular as they once were because burning coal emits a lot of carbon monoxide. Any fireplace insert will require proper supervision, and it’s a good idea to install a carbon monoxide detector in the room for added safety.
