If you’re not interested in digging up your yard, but you still need to direct water away from your house, another option is to extend your downspouts further out into the yard. Two methods to do this are:

  • Adding a splashguard. This is the simplest method. You can purchase a splashguard at your local hardware store and place it under your downspout. This will act as a funnel to direct water away from your house.

  • Add downspout extension at the end. You can also add an additional downspout to the end of the “elbow” as a way to extend the water further out into your yard. Some hardware stores sell downspouts with a flexible extension that you can maneuver around your yard.

The above alternatives are great options if your gutters are above a slab foundation that you wouldn’t want to dig up. One downside to these methods is if your yard slopes back upwards to your home, then the water won’t actually flow away. In which case, burying your downspouts if the best option to avoid flooding and water damage to your home.

The gutters themselves cost between $3 and $30 per linear foot, depending on the material. Aluminum and vinyl are the least expensive, running between $3 and $7 per linear foot. Stainless steel gutters are in the middle-ground, costing between $9 and $20 per linear foot, and copper is the most expensive at $15 to $30 per linear foot.

Rain dripping between your gutters and the fascia might indicate that the gutters are misaligned with the fascia board or there are loose screws in the gutters, allowing water to pass through. Oxidation is what causes copper to turn green. This oxidation is called a patina or verdigris, and in general, the process can take a few years. Your local temperature and humidity conditions play a big role, however; some gutters may not begin to turn green for 20 to 30 years if you keep them clean and maintained. Some homeowners prefer the penny-like sheen of copper. In some cases, you can prevent oxidation by regularly using a specialized anti-tarnishing finish.
