"My experience with Fanel Hardscapes and Landscapes was excellent. They repaired my walkways and built beautiful stone driveway columns, including a custom stone mailbox. The team was professional, detail-oriented, and attentive to my vision, offering helpful design input throughout. The workmanship is exceptional—the walkways look refreshed, and the columns and mailbox create a striking focal point that enhances my home’s curb appeal. Beyond the craftsmanship, the crew was punctual, respectful, kept the area clean, and completed the project on time. I highly recommend them for their quality, reliability, and craftsmanship."

"Elliott and Sons did a great job excavating my basement and prepping the yard for seeding. Would definitely use them again for any work needed. Always on time and never had to wonder what was going on as they kept me up to date on everything. Great company and top of line equipment too."

I started off in a skid steer at young age with my family owning an excavation business and became very interested at a young age. I’ve been in excavation full time since I was 15 years old working at 2 grading company’s one residential and the other commercial to better my knowledge for whatever the job throws at my crew and I.

"Tyson went above and beyond the job he was hired to do. We agreed to his clearing my yard to put in a patio. He ended up putting in a full stone patio for me that includes a space for a fire pit that is level. Quality work and deserves a 12 out of 10. Highly recommended. This site won't let me upload photos, says file is too large."

Landscaping questions, answered by experts

Unless it only rains once in a blue moon where you live, you’re going to want water-loving plants in your garden bed or pot. A few ideas for plants that aren’t super fast-growing (meaning they’re good in pots or near foundations) and can handle a lot of standing water include:

  • Acorus (Sweet flag)

  • Colocasia esculenta (Taro or elephant ear): In many climates, these are annuals, making them less desirable because you need to adjust the chain again after each replant.

  • Equisetum scirpoides (Dwarf horsetail rush): non-dwarf varieties of horsetail are fast growers and can take over quickly.

  • Juncus effusus (Curly rush)

  • Osmunda regalis (Royal fern): Royal fern can grow quickly but can also handle being crowded, making them good container plants.

You should exercise care when deciding how to landscape over a leach field for your septic system. You typically want lightweight materials that won’t damage the drain field’s perforated pipes. When adding plants to the area, select plants with shallow roots, such as grass or flower gardens. Trees with deep roots could damage the pipes in the field.

As with anything you do near your foundation, you’ll want to ensure proper drainage when you plant your foundation beds. Your drainage should run downhill from the highest point against your foundation to avoid water intrusion and incurring expensive foundation repair costs.

Yes, you can landscape in the rain, but you should take some precautions to keep yourself and your tools safe. Avoid using electric landscaping tools during rainfall, and don’t mow, thatch, aerate, or rake in the rain, as your tools can more easily tear out roots in the loose soil. Be careful when working on wet grass, and take your time to avoid slipping. Avoid putting in new plants before a particularly bad storm, as heavy rain and strong winds can damage or uproot plants that aren’t yet established.

If you live in an area with heavy rain or you like the idea of an extra layer of cushion under your feet, you may want to consider adding additional layers under your grass. There are pads that are purely for comfort and ones that can help accelerate drainage for those heavy rains.
