"The plumbers who arrived on time quickly determined I had an electrical problem, not a sump pump problem. "The installers showed up when arranged to replace our worn out tub with a walk-in shower. "They were very costly and said that they could only install the shower, when, in fact, we needed plumbing done plus a shower install. We ended up finding a reliable plumber who did both, and for a much better price. Once we gave AHD our phone number, they called us regularly, as well, which was quite annoying."

Replacing cast iron pipes when they’ve reached the end of their life span is key to preventing leaks and clogs. Over time, cast iron pipes corrode and experience pipe scale, which thickens the inside of the walls and increases the chance of clogs while also decreasing water flow. Dirty, cloudy faucets have been stained by tap water, that is "hard water." The scaly deposits you're seeing are actually signs of calcium buildup. If you have visible cloudiness on the outside, there's a high chance you have calcium buildup in your pipes that needs to be treated.

The type of sealant you use on a leaking pipe will depend on the pipe material and the cause of the leak. PVC P-traps should avoid petroleum-based sealants, which can degrade the plastic and worsen the leak. Pipe sealant is specifically designed for use on pipes, but remember—if your P-trap has a crack–it’s best to replace the pipe to avoid future leaks.

The time it takes to fix a leaking pipe is determined by the location of the leak, the extent of the damage, and the experience level of the person completing this task. Leaks from exposed pipes should only take an hour or so, but that can increase to several hours if a significant section of pipe needs to be replaced. Pipes in walls or ceilings will take two to six hours, while complex underground pipe repairs can take multiple days.

You can fix a leaking outdoor spigot by replacing the washer, tightening the bonnet, or replacing the spigot altogether. Turn off the water supply and open the spigot to see the issue. You may need to tighten the bonnet by 1/8- to 1/4-inch of a turn. You might also need to see if the washer is damaged or worn. If those fixes don’t stop the leak, you should replace the outdoor spigot. Consider a frost-proof sillcock to prevent future freezes and leaking.
