Customers say: Quick response

"When I lived in Vermillion SD, John did all of my remodeling projects from 1994-2016. These included totally gutting and finishing my kitchen; finishing a basement to include a den, bedroom, bath, and laundry room; and replacing the exterior siding and trim on my 1974 house. He is an amazing carpenter/craftsman. He is easy to work with and comes up with creative solutions to problems. He comes at a moment when notice when emergencies arise and his rate is extremely reasonable. I highly recommend John for any addition or remodeling project."

"Tristan and his team removed our old fence and installed a new wood fence. Communication was great and easy to work with. We requested a minor change and was told "no problem". We are happy that we chose Great Plains Fence LLC!"

"They came and quoted me and were able to start the work the next week. Kept in contact with me if there were questions and gave excellent recommendations when I wasn't sure of something. My fence looks amazing and was completed timely. They even found an unexpected issue and were able to help address is quickly and the extra cost was reasonable and worth every penny. Will be using them when I replace the other portion of my fence."

Fencing questions, answered by experts

You can use a few different tactics to prevent your deck gate from sagging. Aside from using strong, rot-resistant woods, introducing a diagonal element—such as a tension rod or solid piece of wood to act as a brace—across the gate will offer better support. You can also use rigid joists to prevent the gate from sagging.

Moisture and rot are the largest threat to wooden fences. Stain can help your wood fence last 15 to 20 years, but only if you choose a stain with waterproofing qualities or add a sealant. Oil-based stains create a thicker moisture barrier than water-based stains, though both are mold and mildew resistant. You’ll generally need to re-stain your fence every one to eight years to get full protection.

When it comes to maintenance, vinyl fencing is your best bet for not having to worry about scratches, repainting, or wear and tear from the weather. Vinyl is a material made of polyvinyl chloride (also known as PVC) that can last for years without requiring repairs or maintenance. It’s also one of the lower-cost fence materials to build with.

In the vast majority of cases, chain-link fences are less expensive than wood fences. Installing a wood fence costs anywhere from 20% to 30% more than a chain-link fence, or an average of $3,100, whereas a similarly sized chain-link fence will average around $2,400. Even with add-ons and additional protective finishes, a chain-link fence is very likely to cost you less than a wood fence. The only exception would be a split rail wood fence, which can cost about half the price of a chain-link fence or less.

A bamboo fence can last up to 20 years when properly installed and maintained. Bamboo is a durable material, but to get the most life out of it, you should clean and seal the fence every few years. Staining the bamboo can also restore the appearance if the color fades over time. Use screws to fasten the bamboo, rather than twine, to ensure the bamboo fence stays together longer.
