The life of a shower cartridge depends on the valve type and materials, frequency of shower use, hardness of the water, and the installation process. Brass cartridges can last up to 20 years, while those with plastic components may only last 4 or 5 years. You can replace shower cartridges with plastic components when replacing the showerhead as part of a regular replacement schedule. With a brass model, every 15 years is a good standard to follow.

Start by unscrewing the overflow valve, which is located on the wall of your tub between the floor drain and the tub spout. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the unit before starting, let the water in the tank cool down for a few hours, and wear safety equipment to protect yourself, including heavy-duty rubber gloves and safety goggles.
