"I had a bit of trouble with my molding around the doors vs how the system was designed. The tech guy hung with me for 39 minutes until it was perfect. I called customer service a couple times after that with questions that came up. The customer service team are professional and knowledgeable."

"RT Handyman did an excellent job creating the vision we had for our main level remodel. TJ is very detail oriented and a perfectionist! He walked us through each area of the remodel to discuss details including price, time for completion and what to expect throughout the process. RT Handyman and their crew were very respectful of our home and very clean. Every day their work area was cleaned and I never had to worry about kids or dogs getting hurt or stepping into a mess. We LOVE our remodel and TJ's work is truly amazing! I would absolutely recommend RT Handyman for any home project."

"Their warranty cost and service prices are more expensive than a lot of other options. They hire out to contractors with terrible ratings and you're stuck with whomever they assign you to."

Locksmiths questions, answered by experts

Newer, electric-powered door locks generally have a life span of five years or less. That’s thanks, in large part, to a phenomenon called planned obsolescence, in which products are programmed to need replacing after a certain amount of time. That’s also why older, manual, push-key locksets can last up to 30 years with regular cleanings and maintenance. When it does come time for a new set-up, know that the cost to change locks ranges from $130 to $500 on average.

Rekeying your own locks is a low-cost task that prevents you from having to replace the locks themselves completely. The first couple of times you rekey a lock may be challenging because this is an intermediate DIY task. You can purchase a rekey kit from most hardware stores, but make sure you’re buying the kit from the brand of lock in your home that you’re going to rekey.

Costs depend on lock type, service complexity, labor, emergency availability, and whether security system integration is needed.

If part of the key is protruding out of the lock, you can use a pair of needle-nosed pliers or tweezers to gently turn the key in the lock to open the door. If the key is fully inserted into the lock, you may also be able to use a key extractor to help turn the key into the unlocked position.

But if the key breaks off halfway into the lock or you simply can’t reach it to help engage the unlocking mechanisms, you should probably call a professional.

If your key breaks in a lock, first remain calm and avoid forcing the broken piece further in. You may be able to remove it yourself if a portion of the key is still protruding from the lock. To aid removal, lubricate the keyhole with a graphite-based spray. Then, try using tools like pliers, tweezers, a bobby pin, or even a jigsaw blade to gently grasp and pull the broken piece out. If these methods don't work, you can't reach the key, or you're concerned about damaging the lock, it's best to call a professional locksmith for assistance.
