"Dave did a great job tinting the windows on the back of our house. The sun coming through had made it necessary to restrain a portion of our kitchen hardwood floors. He tinted two French doors, two kitchen windows, a breakfast area window and two transoms. We have been extremely pleased with the results. It is protecting our floors, furniture and minimizing the glare on the TV in the adjacent room. He did the work in a timely manner (3hours) and arrived when he said he would. We had priced the job the day before with another company at a local trade show. Without knowing what the other company had quoted, Dave gave us a price that was 40% less expensive, saving us several hundred dollars. If you need windows tinted Iâ  d sure suggest you give him a call."

"The installers and the person who came out to talk about financing the windows did great. Bit the people I talked to in the office were kind of rude and the would hang up on me when I would call to try to get answers about when they would be installing the windows."

Windows questions, answered by experts

In some cases, you might need a permit for a window replacement, which is hard to get if you’re not a professional contractor. You should probably just hire a window replacement company in the first place because the job is complicated and can be dangerous for the average DIYer. You may not even save any money doing it yourself because contractors purchase materials wholesale.

To keep cold out, look for treatments that sit close to the window frame and are made from thick, insulating materials. Thermal curtains, cellular shades, window quilts, and insulated shutters can all help retain heat. Layering window treatments, like pairing lined curtains with cellular shades, can provide even better insulation by further reducing drafts and heat transfer.

Yes, bifold windows can open inward or outward. Your window manufacturer will label windows as “in-swing” or “out-swing,” which indicates the direction they open. If your installer is ordering windows for you, make sure they know which direction you want them to open. In-swing bifold windows will preserve as much space in your outdoor area as possible. Out-swing bifold windows are great on the second floor, where obstructions outside aren’t a concern.

There are several ways to reduce noise coming through your windows. You can seal gaps around the window frames with acoustic caulk or fresh weatherstripping to reduce noise and air leaks. Installing sound-dampening curtains, thick blinds, or shades can also help deaden sound vibrations. For an additional interior barrier, consider installing an acrylic or plexiglass sheet inside the window, which stifles sound while still allowing for outdoor views. Another strategy is to add external barriers, like dense shrubbery or a sturdy fence, to block neighborhood noises. If these methods are not effective enough, it might be time to install new noise-canceling windows.

Installing glass block windows has benefits and disadvantages, as with most materials. The pros and cons can vary depending on the type of glass block and the window location.
