"As head of our village landscaping committee, I have been using Earthsystems for repairs of our irrigation when I am unable to repair the bigger issues. Wyatt is very responsive and will go over and above expectations. He has a good crew of courteous workers and gets the job done. He gets quite busy in the summertime, so it may take an extended time for him to address some of the larger issues, but usually can troubleshoot problems and advise me. I highly recommend him and his company."

"I had a driveway poured a little over a month ago and We absolutely love it. From the very first day that DS construction broke ground to install the forms, they keep me informed from start to finish. I was never left wondering exactly what was goin on..Overall my experience with Ds was amazing and I would most definitely refer him to Others and I would call him back again if I ever need more concrete work done in the future.Wonderful hard working group of guys and most of all they are doing the work to the satisfaction of each customer."

"We contracted with Wendell Varnes of Coastal Homes and Sunrooms to build our home in 2019. We chose him because of his professionalism. The building phases were on time and he did an excellent job of problem solving the numerous changes we made to the plans. We appreciated his patience. He also assisted us in choosing items such as kitchen cabinets, flooring, design and screening of our side porch. We also contracted with him to install an outdoor patio which complimented our yard. Overall we felt he delivered a great product at a great price. I would recommend Wendell to anyone looking to either build or restore a home."

Retaining Wall Installers questions, answered by experts

Rebar is a steel support that goes inside concrete to prevent structural damage over time. Concrete is susceptible to impact, weight, and tension. By inserting rebar into the concrete during the installation, you can help extend its lifespan and avoid hazardous situations where the foundation of your home gives way to tensile forces.

Railroad ties can be good for retaining walls, but it depends on the area. They have a desirable rustic look and are durable. The problem is they’re treated with creosote, a preservative the EPA says poses a risk to humans and wildlife. Over time, the preservative seeps out of the wood and into the ground. Many areas have banned the use of creosote-treated wood on residential properties. If your area does allow it, never use railroad ties near an edible garden or drinking water source. Instead, use wood that’s treated with an EPA-approved preservative or a wood-alternative composite material.

Sand and gravel are two suitable options for filling behind a retaining wall. If you’re building your own retaining wall, you’ll complete this part of the process—known as backfilling—after you finish laying the blocks. Make sure not to skip it—otherwise, you could wind up with drainage issues, which can cause your retaining wall to collapse.

To maintain the integrity of your landscape, a retaining wall must be installed if the slope of the angle exceeds 35 degrees. The lean of the wall must be 1 inch per 12 inches in height to disperse the weight of the soil uniformly and guarantee the correct drainage of the soil.

The longevity of flood walls depends on how they were constructed, but most wood, gravel, and cement flood walls last 10 years. While aluminum flood walls may cost far more initially, they can be a good investment as they can last decades and will not be damaged by exposure to the elements.
