"As head of our village landscaping committee, I have been using Earthsystems for repairs of our irrigation when I am unable to repair the bigger issues. Wyatt is very responsive and will go over and above expectations. He has a good crew of courteous workers and gets the job done. He gets quite busy in the summertime, so it may take an extended time for him to address some of the larger issues, but usually can troubleshoot problems and advise me. I highly recommend him and his company."

"I had a driveway poured a little over a month ago and We absolutely love it. From the very first day that DS construction broke ground to install the forms, they keep me informed from start to finish. I was never left wondering exactly what was goin on..Overall my experience with Ds was amazing and I would most definitely refer him to Others and I would call him back again if I ever need more concrete work done in the future.Wonderful hard working group of guys and most of all they are doing the work to the satisfaction of each customer."

"We contracted with Wendell Varnes of Coastal Homes and Sunrooms to build our home in 2019. We chose him because of his professionalism. The building phases were on time and he did an excellent job of problem solving the numerous changes we made to the plans. We appreciated his patience. He also assisted us in choosing items such as kitchen cabinets, flooring, design and screening of our side porch. We also contracted with him to install an outdoor patio which complimented our yard. Overall we felt he delivered a great product at a great price. I would recommend Wendell to anyone looking to either build or restore a home."

Retaining Wall Installers questions, answered by experts

There are contractors specifically trained in the design and construction of retaining walls. Retaining wall contractors are skilled at dealing with the soil on your property and assessing what kind of drainage should be installed. They will recommend the best materials to use for the project and can handle the processing of permits by local authorities.

Options include concrete, stone, brick, and wood, tailored for specific design needs.

Sand and gravel are two suitable options for filling behind a retaining wall. If you’re building your own retaining wall, you’ll complete this part of the process—known as backfilling—after you finish laying the blocks. Make sure not to skip it—otherwise, you could wind up with drainage issues, which can cause your retaining wall to collapse.

If you don’t backfill a retaining wall—either at all or adequately enough—the wall won’t drain well, and water will be able to pass through it. Poor drainage will lead to a warped wall or a buildup of hydrostatic pressure, which can eventually collapse your retaining wall. If you have particularly sloped land, consult a structural engineer to ensure your hardscaping is adding value to your home.

Generally, a railroad tie retaining wall consisting of a single line of ties should be between 3 and 4 feet tall—and the height often tops out at around 6 feet. You can go taller, but you may need additional footings and reinforcements, including a second layer of railroad ties to support the added weight of the soil it’s holding back.
