"We hired Harvin Masonry to extend our small patio with pavers. Baron Harvin was a wealth of information in our decision making process. He and his crew worked very professionally completing our project. There were delays due to heavy rains and Baron knew to wait until the ground was dry enough to proceed. We could not be happier with the end result and the attention to detail. The surrounding yard was left very clean as well. Will definitely hire Harvin Masonry again for any future projects of this sort."

"Edwin was very knowledgeable and gave us a fair quote. We'd have liked to gotten on his repair schedule sooner than 4 weeks before he had an opening, but completely understand now why it took so long; Mount Valley is a great company to work with! The repair work significantly improved the stability of the foundation, and the very scary settling sounds (from the stress-relief in the attic's rafters) have ceased. The cosmetics of the masonry are visibly also improved, however the foreman did not advise additional lifting of the foundation, (necessary to completely close remaining gaps in the masonry) for concern that damage in other areas could occur. This opinion was reasonable, although the masonry cracks did not completely close. There are still visible mortar gaps; before dismissing the crew, my husband advised the crew not to address mortar because they brought grey mortar, not sand-color needed. I've since asked Mount Valley what they can do for us, and am awaiting their response."

"Someone hit my brick mailbox and I hired Peace Construction to rebuild it. It only took 1 day to be rebuilt. The bricks for the mailbox matched the exact bricks on my home. It looked better than the one that was damaged. The owner was very professional and extremely easy to work with. I would DEFINITELY recommend Peace Construction for any masonry needs. They are quick and professional. I was very satisfied and the price was exceptionally reasonable."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

You should generally drill into the mortar joints when installing shutters on brick. Mortar is softer, which makes drilling easier and puts less strain on your tools. It also lowers the risk of cracking a brick—something that’s a lot harder to fix. Mortar holds fasteners well enough for standard shutters, and if you ever need to patch the holes later, it’s a much simpler job than dealing with damaged brick. Just keep in mind that if your mortar joints are too thin or the hardware calls for brick anchoring, you'll need to check the manufacturer’s recommendations and adjust accordingly.

Removing paint from brick can have both aesthetic and practical value. Some people prefer the timeless look of bare brick, making it worthwhile to remove old paint layers. Brick also lasts longer when unpainted, as paint traps moisture, causing the brick to deteriorate more quickly. If your brick walls are already in bad shape, stripping the paint off might do more harm than good.

Yes, you can cut patio stones with a circular saw. Similar to using an electric grinder, you will need to use a diamond blade as this is the most effective blade for cutting a material like stone. The stone must be wet when using a circular saw to ensure the cut is smooth.

The white stains you see on your bricks are likely efflorescence, which is salt and lime buildup. To remove efflorescence stains, simply brush them away with a stiff brush. For larger, more stubborn stains, scrub the stains with a water-detergent solution.

If your old bricks are in decent condition and you have the space to store them where they’ll be protected from the elements, keeping old bricks is often worthwhile. You’d spend anywhere from $70 to a few hundred dollars to have them removed from your property, in which case you won’t be able to use them for future projects. Holding on to old bricks in good condition means you can use them later for other DIY projects, potentially saving yourself some money on disposal and new materials down the road.
