In general, PVC (polyvinyl chloride), PEX (polyethylene), and copper are the three piping materials used in new constructions when adding water supply lines. There are some caveats. PEX and copper are considered ideal when running lines that will handle hot water because they are not at risk for melting and warping the way that PVC piping can. At $0.40 to $4 per linear foot, PEX is considered more affordable than copper pipes, which cost $2 to $12 per linear foot. PVC is considered appropriate in water lines for cold taps only.

Frozen pipes can negatively affect your hot water heater. If the pipes leading to or from your hot water heater freeze and burst, as can happen with frozen pipes, your water heater can be seriously damaged and even require replacement. In less extreme cases, frozen pipes can compromise or cut off your hot water supply.

PEX is approved for use with main water lines due to its stability and resistance to high water pressure. If you live in a cold climate and are wondering how to unfreeze pipes, it's helpful to know that PEX is less likely to burst in freezing temperatures.   • High water pressure: High water pressure is hard on pipes over time and can cause cracks and leaks, too.

If you're dealing with a clogged sink drain, you may be able to avoid removing the drain by using a plunger to dislodge the clog. While we associate plungers with toilets, they can do the same job with your sink drain. Be gentle, though, as forceful movements can push clogs further into your plumbing system and make them more difficult to remove. Additionally, make sure you’re using a sink plunger—with a flat bottom—and not a toilet plunger—which has a smaller bottom protruding from the larger flat piece.
