"I was not there during the work; however, the project manager was Great, he provided a daily progress report every evening. Texted photos of the project in different stages of their progress. He alerted me when there was an issue and provided sound recommendations and options. He stayed in budget but did not sacrifice quality and workmenship. General Background: The purpose of the project was leveling the house. The house was built on a crawl space about 30 years ago. Because the house was on a crawl space and the distance from the ground to the house was about two blocks high or about 22 inches high, a tunnel rat could not fit into that space to obtain an accurate assessment of the foundation issue. I know, I was a tunnel rat during one of my tours in Vietnam. Mount Valley Foundation Services project manager could only give me an estimate of the foundation issue. Based on his experience, he provided a very good estimate what was wrong and what it would take to level the house and cost. What that meant was they would have to tear out the subflooring exposing the crawl space area. Every room offered a new surprise; however, the project manager was on target regarding his assessment. I was very impressed regarding their workers, starting the project on time, they cleaned up the area before leaving every day. I am very glad I hired them to do this job. John Thomas"

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Brick can increase the value of your home depending on the type of masonry materials used. Homes generally have a higher resale value when they have brick siding, and brick is also easier to maintain (and lasts longer) than other types of siding, which can motivate buyers to make an offer.

Just keep in mind, however, that although brick can up the asking price when you sell your house, the cost to brick a house is also more expensive than other typical siding costs—so you’ll invest more in the project.

Yes, it is normal to see some minor hairline cracks in brick or mortar over time, often due to natural foundation settling. However, not all cracks are harmless. You should be concerned and contact a masonry professional for an inspection if you notice cracks that are getting wider or longer, or if new ones keep appearing. Other serious warning signs that can indicate significant structural or foundation damage include large vertical cracks (especially those that widen as they go up), stair-step cracks, L-shaped cracks, and deep horizontal cracks. Factors like temperature changes, moisture, and structural loading can also cause cracks to form or worsen.

Painted exterior brick does not usually need sealing. Brick is a porous material, so you don’t want to apply a sealant that could trap moisture inside the bricks and cause erosion and structural damage. The risk of moisture-induced damage after sealing is higher in colder climates where trapped moisture can expand if it freezes. On the other hand, it makes sense to seal really old brick or kitchen backsplashes, where moisture from cooking can weaken the brick.

Use fire bricks for a brick pizza oven. These bricks are typically used for fireplaces and chimneys as they can withstand high temperatures from heat sources. If you attempt to use any other kind of bricks, it’s likely that this material will crack from such high heat exposure in the best case—and potentially explode and cause serious harm in the worst case.

Mortar is a mixture of sand and cement that binds materials, such as bricks, stones, and concrete blocks, together. Think of it as the glue that fills in the gaps between bricks and stones, then seals them in place to prevent damage or deterioration. Mortar also helps spread the load across a wall or structure, keeping cracks and shifting at bay.
