"Nathan put in the gravel driveway (with underlay clay) and contracted an all metal garage to be built by installers. His team built the forms and contracted for the concrete pad to be poured that the garage now sits on. His efforts were not easy. Through his efforts we are pleased with the results. Nathan is a great guy to deal with."

"Polite contractor who responded to the request on Angi quickly; covered the hardware on the fence; cleaned up afterwards. I did see a tiny bit of overspray in one spot on my vinyl siding even though they used heavy paper to shield. It was a bit windy. However, a Mr Clean Magic Eraser took it right off with one wipe."

"Del Phillips did an outstanding job renovating our upstairs spare bathroom. From start to finish, he was professional, reliable, and extremely detail-oriented. He took the time to explain the process, kept the work area clean, and made sure every step was completed to the highest standard. The finished bathroom looks incredible — better than we imagined — and the craftsmanship is top-notch. Del’s communication throughout the project was excellent, and he completed the work on time and within budget. We couldn’t be happier with the results and would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a trustworthy and skilled contractor."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Framing a basement takes three to five days, on average, when completed by a professional, though it may take longer for a larger space. Keep in mind this doesn’t include the time to complete the design, obtain permits, and install the drywall on the framing. On average, fully finishing a basement takes an average of 45 days.

Framing a house with steel generally takes less time—around five to eight weeks—than most building materials. The steel components can also be made quickly off-site and manufactured with pre-punched holes for running piping and electrical wiring, which will lessen the prep work and extra labor during construction.

When deciding whether to use nails or screws for framing, the specific needs of the project must be taken into account. Nails have long been the go-to option for framing due to their affordability, ease of installation, and ability to withstand shear forces. They are perfect for structural framing projects where fast assembly is essential. In contrast, screws offer exceptional holding power and are particularly useful in situations requiring increased strength and resistance to pull-out forces. For projects that prioritize accuracy and long-lasting quality, screws may be the preferred option, though nails remain a dependable and efficient choice.

Most of the time, you’ll want to use screws on your subfloor rather than nails. Nails can actually weaken plywood, whereas screws can easily penetrate without damage. They also form a more secure connection because of their shape, preventing squeaky floors and tightly holding the subfloor in place. That said, some contractors do prefer nails depending on the type of floor covering because they allow for more flexibility.

Not all porch columns are load-bearing, though they can be. Some porch columns are simply decorative. There are ways to identify a load-bearing column, like looking for visible seams and a foundation. Also, check to see if the column directly enters the ground. In some porch installations, a contractor will excavate a hole to install a column into the earth along with a buried cement base for stability.
