"Express Sunrooms just finished enclosing our covered porch and we couldn't be happier. They helped us obtain the HOA approval by creating a CAD design and submitting everything that was asked for in a timely manner. They even arranged for us to visit a home where they had finished a similar job. Work on our house began a week later and they finished the installation in three days. They showed up on time and were very professional throughout the project. I would recommend them for your Sunroom needs without hesitation."

"It took some time to get the written estimate, but it was fair and comparable to others I received. He was far more thorough in pinpointing the actual spot of the roof leak than any others. The replacement shingles were appropriately matched; they are barely noticeable. Worked efficiently and properly cleaned up afterwards. I would hire again if needed."

"Jeff was very professional and offered suggestions for my home windows and patio doors tint that would be energy and cost efficient. Then he was gracious enough to change the date of installation for me due to a minor emergency of mine. Chaz, the installer, was on time, prepared and capable. I am very pleased with the results of this project and my next few electric bills."

"Firstl, I left a message and Jeff called back within minutes. Was friendly, helpful. willing to work around our schedule. He showed up on time for our "estimate" appointment and obviously knew his business! We had windows in our home tinted, and he had samples and was very knowledgeable, and honest, about the product. He gave us an immediate estimate, and scheduled the work for just a few days later. Chas installed the tinting, and again was on time (even a few minutes early) and was extremely polite. And the finished product looks great! We can already tell a difference in the amount of heat that comes in.Extremely pleased, start to finish!"

Patio Covers questions, answered by experts

Awnings offer a variety of materials to choose from, each of which has its own benefits. Cotton is a lower-cost option that’s also more eco-friendly because it’s made from natural materials, while acrylic-coated polyester and vinyl offer better durability against harsh weather. Fiberglass and metal are also resilient to weather, although metal can be vulnerable to corrosion without protective sealant. Ultimately, you’ll need to consider your climate and your budget in deciding the best material for your awning.

Creating a screen room is one of the most cost-effective ways to enclose a patio so you can still use it in the winter. Most screen rooms aren’t insulated, so you’ll need to wrap up warm or use patio heaters in winter. Also, be aware they might not hold up well if you live in a location where heavy snow is common.

It’s best to opt for a lightweight roof, as a heavy roof adds a lot of weight and pressure to the support posts and hardware and destabilizes the structure. Vinyl is a good, lightweight option, as is a nice open trellis, louvered aluminum or vinyl slats, or fabric panels. Clear polycarbonate is another great option that offers seamless shelter and additional UV protection without completely obscuring the sunshine. You can also choose retractable coverings or an awning that you only use in wet weather or when you need additional shade.

Durable materials suited for climate include aluminum for coastal areas or composite wood in varying environments for durability and minimal upkeep.

It’s best to keep your awning retracted if winds are 25 miles per hour or more to make sure your awning doesn’t sustain irreparable damage due to wind. Some awnings can take winds up to 30 miles per hour without any damage, but it’s best to consult the manufacturer’s guidance. A good rule of thumb is if it’s too windy for you to comfortably stand outside, it’s time to bring the awning in.
