KB Kitchen & Bath Concepts was formed in June of 1991 as a custom kitchen design business. Like so many companies learn, getting started wasn’t easy. In fact, the young KB Kitchen did just one job that first year! Things turned around in 1995 when a large local builder commissioned the KB Kitchen team to install the cabinets in every one of his new homes. The work only got better from there, and in 2007, KB Kitchen installed the cabinets and countertops in over 5000 homes. Today, KB Kitchen services the Columbia, Charleston, Hilton Head, Charlotte, Myrtle Beach, Savannah and Miami markets and has been recognized as Remodeler of the Year and is a Board of Directors member of the Columbia HBA. Bob Wilkes, president, has served as Chairman of the Columbia HBA Remodeling Board and in 2009 was a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by KBx, the nation’s leading cabinet network.

Although you can complete a closet frame in just an afternoon, finishing the entire closet will take a few days to a week. However, that’s still not as much as the average time it takes to remodel a closet, which can take anywhere from several weeks to more than a month. That’s because you also have to consider the time it will take to demolish the existing space, plan a new design, order materials, and actually install it. 

Building a custom closet costs about $2,000, on average. Because many types, sizes, and designs are available, the cost to build custom closets ranges from $250 to $6,000 or more. A reach-in closet is on the lower end of the price range from about $250 to $1,500, compared to a walk-in closet at $750 to $3,500 or a wardrobe at the high end between $1,500 and $6,000 or more.

The differences between a built-in closet and a walk-in aren’t that different from a built-in wardrobe and a walk-in closet. It’s fairly simple—a walk-in closet is a closet you can physically enter, stand in, and walk around in. A built-in (whether wardrobe or closet) is more akin to covered shelves installed into a recess in the wall. Another big difference is walk-in closets almost always have traditional full-size doors, while built-ins either have no doors or use sliding doors.

Custom closets cost around $2,100 on average, but you could pay anywhere from $500 up to $6,000 or more for your custom design. The scope of your design services will be the most significant factor, with standalone designs being the most affordable and design and construction services costing toward the higher end of the price range. Most closet design services include a closet and construction plan. 

  • Custom reach-in closet: $500–$1,500

  • Custom walk-in closet: $750–$5,000

  • High-end walk-in closet: $2,000–$5,000+

Bump-out additions can add some space to a closet without requiring any significant structural work. This entails pushing back the existing rear or side of the closet, simply moving the wall into either an adjacent room or unused space. For ground-floor closets, this could even be extended to the exterior of the home, but that has its own complications. Bump-outs are a good discussion to have with your contractor if you’re just looking to increase the space a little—not renovate the entire closet space.
