"I had very uneven walkways in my yard which caused a bad fall for my wife. I reviewed A&R's very positive reviews on Angi so contacted them for the job. Allen could not have been more responsive or professional. He gave me a solid quote and showed up on time and ready to do the work. His crews were very well qualified. They demoed and formed the job one day and completed the job the next. They cleaned up, put mulch back in place and left everything in good order. You can hardly tell that anyone was there. I'm happy to recommend Allen and A&R as a well qualified contractor."

"We have hired a number of companies for various projects at different properties through the years and this team was by far the best. Alex, responded immediately. He gave us new ideas that were great enhancements from our original plan and stayed within our budget. They showed up on time and did the job as they said they would. Great experience. Will work with them again soon."

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

Charleston’s humid climate, heavy rainfall, and risk of hurricanes make timing and material selection crucial for asphalt paving. Scheduling projects between October and March helps avoid extreme heat and storm disruptions. High humidity can slow curing, so using weather-appropriate asphalt mixes and sealants is important. Effective drainage design is essential to prevent water pooling and extend the lifespan of paved surfaces in Charleston’s low-lying areas.

Helpful?

New homeowners in Charleston should prioritize drainage improvements for their asphalt paving to manage over 49 inches of annual rain. Sealcoating within the first year is critical to protect against intense SC sun and humidity. Also, address any existing cracks before they worsen and reinforce driveway edges to prevent washout from heavy rain, which is common in the area.

Helpful?

For your asphalt paving in Charleston, SC, inspect for winter damage in spring and check drainage before hurricane season begins. During the hot summer, monitor for heat-related softening and rutting. In the fall, assess any damage from storms or flooding. Use Charleston’s mild winter to plan and schedule repairs, as this is the optimal season for paving work in the region.

Helpful?

It's time to schedule asphalt paving projects in Charleston, SC if you see standing water after thunderstorms or cracks wider than a quarter-inch. Alligator cracking, accelerated by local heat and humidity, is another urgent sign. Fading from intense sun or minor settling due to sandy soil also indicates maintenance is needed. Plan major work during the optimal window from October to March.

Helpful?

In Charleston, unexpected costs during asphalt paving often arise from addressing poor soil conditions, such as the need for soil stabilization or additional excavation. Homeowners may also encounter expenses for upgrading drainage systems to handle frequent flooding. Unforeseen utility line adjustments, permit requirements, and weather-related delays—especially during hurricane season—can further impact both the timeline and the overall scope of your paving project.
