The number of shower niches you need (or want) depends on the size of the shower and how many bathroom products you plan on storing. You can, in theory, tile your fireplace hearth with most tiles. However just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. Tile will almost always last longer than laminate flooring, regardless of the type of tile installed. Porcelain tile can last for 75 years or more with proper care, and even less durable ceramic tile will last for 60 years or more, provided they’re installed by a tile professional. On the other hand, laminate flooring has an average lifespan of around 20 years, and you might only get 10 to 15 years out of low-cost laminate flooring. As such, tile will add far more value to your home than laminate.

It’s easiest to start from an edge as it gives you a straight line. A problem may arise if your edge doesn’t line up perfectly, in which case it’s best to start from the center. Some think that starting tile from the center adds a focal point in the center of the hearth. 

Glazed ceramic tiles don’t need to be sealed because the glazing already offers some protection against moisture. Unglazed ceramic tiles need to be sealed to keep the porous tile safe from moisture and staining. However, both types of tile can benefit from sealing. Sealant can make the tiles easier to keep clean and offer more resistance to water, spills, and stains.
