"We contacted Joe Shaw at Nature Redesigned Landscaping to discuss ideas relating to our landscaping. I knew I wanted an aesthetic that reflected a natural vibe in keeping with our existing landscaping. As he walked our property and listened to my ideas, Joe came up with a plan to add not only beauty to my yard but also provided a "beachy" feel to our property that we love! His team arrived on time, worked the entire day and did a full clean up before leaving our home. Joe is professional, considerate and top notch in his field. Joe will be returning in the Fall to hydro-seed our lawn. Without question, I highly recommend Nature Redesigned Landscaping. Do yourself a favor, check out his website and see for yourself the beauty he can add to your property!"

"We hired DiSpirito landscaping to help us manage overcrowded garden beds and to create new beds. We could not be more impressed with their expertise and their work ethic. They listened to what we needed, worked with us to redesign beds, move existing plants and shrubs. Our property has not looked any better. They will be part of our landscape management in the future."

"Bobby is amazing. He truly went above and beyond in cleaning our yard. He even removed some old fencing and brush piles. I've already decided to have him come back for additional lawn care and possibly some landscaping. Very happy!!"

Landscaping questions, answered by experts

The best time to plant a privet hedge is autumn, ideally October or early November. Fall is the best time to plant privet hedges because young plants need plenty of water to jump-start their growth, and it typically rains more during this season. However, you can also successfully plant privets in the spring.

Unless it only rains once in a blue moon where you live, you’re going to want water-loving plants in your garden bed or pot. A few ideas for plants that aren’t super fast-growing (meaning they’re good in pots or near foundations) and can handle a lot of standing water include:

  • Acorus (Sweet flag)

  • Colocasia esculenta (Taro or elephant ear): In many climates, these are annuals, making them less desirable because you need to adjust the chain again after each replant.

  • Equisetum scirpoides (Dwarf horsetail rush): non-dwarf varieties of horsetail are fast growers and can take over quickly.

  • Juncus effusus (Curly rush)

  • Osmunda regalis (Royal fern): Royal fern can grow quickly but can also handle being crowded, making them good container plants.

The soil around your foundation should slope down and away from your home, not toward it. If the grading drops the farther you are from your home, you can enhance the slope by removing more soil. Mark off a few feet from your house and dig up some of this soil. Regrading around your fountain should encourage water to flow away from your home and not collect or “pond.”

If you use the wrong plants for your gardening zone, you’ll likely get less than desirable yields from them. In some cases, your plants can even die. It’s important to ensure that your plants are able to survive in your hardiness zone before getting them into the ground.

As much as you might try to keep a healthy, nutrient-rich lawn, you still may notice signs of St. Augustine decline (SAD)—a viral disease that discolors your grass blades. St. Augustine decline looks like:

  • Discoloration in the leaves (chlorosis)—leaves appear yellow and splotchy

  • Decline in growth

  • Leaves turn black within 3 years

  • Grass appears less vibrant

  • Grass begins to thin

  • Root rot

  • Grass takes longer to recover
